Most studies of new banks have dealt with the effects of entry on the established banks (e.g., on their profitability or deposit growth rates) or on the performance of local banking markets (see [4, 3 6] ); but we know very little about the growth experience of new banks. The present study has attempted to fill part of this gap in the literature by examining the individual growth records of more than 1,000 new banks in branch bank states and in unit bank states, or approximately one-half of all new banks chartered in the United States during a recent twenty-year period. No previous study has attempted to trace the growth of such a large number of new banks on a bank-by-bank basis for such an extended number of years.l On the basis of this information, we have been able to frame a predictive model of new-bank size (section 1) and to analyze the different patterns of new bank growth and survival in branch bank and unit bank states (section 2). Both kinds of information can be useful to the management of a new bank and to bank regulatory authorities.
