PHYSIOLOGIC ACTIONS OF HEPARIN NOT RELATED TO BLOOD CLOTTING.

Thomas F. Dougherty; David A. Dolowitz

Abstract The relation of heparin to inflammation is discussed, as are its relation to ground substance, cells, pinocytosis, and biologic ion exchange. Experimental evidence is given for biologic exchange capacity of heparin in in vitro systems and in the protective effect of heparin in animals. The clinical use of heparin in inflammatory, allergic and infectious diseases is reviewed. Intravenous heparin proved effective in eczemas, hay fever, asthma, laryngotracheobronchitis, interstitial cystitis and many other disease states related to inflammation.
