Cross-Cultural Business Communication Research: State of the Art and Hypotheses for the 1990s:

This article reviews the scholarly literature in cross-cultural business communication and discusses the shortcomings of the existing research. It demonstrates the limita tions of the Western, linear paradigms and expounds upon some unresolved important questions which have been inadequately researched and hence need in-depth examina tion. Finally, the article develops a few testable hypotheses for the 1990s, emanating from the discussion of the research questions.

THE VERY NATURE OF HIGHER EDUCATION itself is undergoing transformation as a result of dramatic technological changes not only in publishing but in the concept of the classroom-based university as an institution. This commentary focuses on facets of scholarly activity bridging from but not strictly related to the writing requirement. If publishing is an extension of teaching, then virtual publishing is, in essence, simply an extension of the virtual classroom.

VIGNETTES OR SCENARIOS are particularly effective tools for instruction in cross-cultural business communication and negotiations. Scenarios are short descriptions of situations which in themselves illustrate a conflict or concept sufficiently to provoke the reader or viewer into self-recognition.Vignettes are the filmed enactment of such scenarios. Because scenarios are short, they can readily fit into even fairly crowded training sessions or classroom schedules. Scenarios frequently illustrate very specific cross-cultural business communication principles. In this respect, they serve the same function as a story that a trainer or professor might
