Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the pharmaceutical supply chain for artemisinin‐based combination therapies (ACT) in Ghana.Design/methodology/approach – This study employed an inductive approach in examining the dynamics of the pharmaceutical supply chain. The study also used analytical hierarchical process in identifying factors that are detrimental to the ACT supply chain.Findings – The study revealed that there are basically two main supply channels through which ACT enters the Ghanaian pharmaceutical system – private and public. The ACT network depicts a strong evidence of actor interdependence and long‐term relationships. However, the key supply chain enabler – the use of information technology – was found to be lacking, leading to delays and disruptions in the supply chain system. Disruption was found to be the main detrimental factor to the supply chain although delay was found to be occurring more frequently. Price increases indicated a low effect on the supply network at the pha...

Most research on the impact of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems implementation on business process outcomes have focused on developed nations. However, Sub-Saharan Africa, a developing region, is a growing ERP market and provides a new context for theory development. We examine the antecedent and outcomes of extent of ERP systems implementation in Sub-Saharan Africa. Specifically, we examine three research questions: 1) “How does an organization’s data culture influence the extent of ERP implementation?”, 2) “How does the extent of ERP implementation influence the ethical behavior and data integration of the organization?”, and 3) “How do ethical behavior and organizational integration influence the business process outcomes?”. We used the panoptic concept as a theoretical lens to develop a research model and six hypotheses to answer the research questions. We tested the model by using the survey methodology to collect data from 115 firms that have implemented ERP systems and operated in 13 industries in Ghana, a Sub-Saharan Africa nation. We used structural equation modeling to analyze the data. We found support for all six hypotheses. We offer both theoretical and managerial implications.

The cocoa sector in Ghana is of strategic importance to the socioeconomic development of the nation. Cocoa has been described as the backbone of Ghana’s economy. Finding appropriate solutions to the challenges facing the cocoa industry will assist the country to increase its performance and prevent farmers from smuggling cocoa to neighbouring nations. However, there is lack of standards to address the challenges with Ghana’s cocoa value chain. Using survey, document reviews, structured interview and Porter’s diamond model, we examined the cocoa value chain in Ghana. Our results can serve as services and standards for the cocoa value chain in Ghana and other similar countries.
