Design, Analysis and Optimization of a Universal Power Factor Correction Circuit for Linear Fluorescent Lamps

Ana Vladan Stankovic; Divya Uppala; David Joseph Kachmarik; Melvin C. Cosby; L. Nerone

In this paper the analysis and optimization of a universal high power factor correction circuit for linear fluorescent lamps is presented. The design and analysis criteria for the converter include a universal voltage input, 120 to 277 V AC with power handling capability from no load to 110 watts. In addition a new PSPICE model for universal power factor correction circuit operating in the critical conduction mode has been developed. Simulation and analytical results have been validated against actual laboratory measurements.

Multi-resonant boost high power factor electronic ballast for compact fluorescent lamps

M.H. Kheraluwala; S.A. El-Hamamsy; David Joseph Kachmarik

A novel, low cost, high power factor ballast, referred to as the multi-resonant boost circuit, for compact fluorescent lamps is introduced. With the addition of a passive network consisting of two diodes and a small boosting capacitor a conventional low power factor electronic ballast is enhanced to a high power factor, low THD circuit. A simple lamp current feedback scheme is employed to keep the lamp current crest factor to below 1.7. The paper presents the operation, design and experimental results of the proposed approach for 230 V, 30 W application required to meet the IEC-555-2 specifications.
