Evaluating and Improving Student Achievement in Business Programs: The Effective Use of Standardized Assessment Tests.

H. Tyrone Black; David L. Duhon

Abstract Having made “continuous improvement” the theme of its accreditation process a decade ago, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) is poised to make “assurance of learning” the current focus of the faculty/student exchange. In this article, the authors discuss how to use standardized assessment tests appropriately and constructively for compliance with this requirement. They provide an overview of accountability in higher education and then focus on assessing student achievement and development. They use results from the Educational Testing Services Major Field Test in Business to illustrate verification of test reliability and validity. Finally, they suggest ways that standardized test results can be used for evaluating and enhancing student performance.

Assessing Intended Employee Behavior in Exit Interviews

Robert A. Giacalone; David L. Duhon

ABSTRACT To assess the effects that feelings toward particular aspects of work life and status (management vs. nonmanagement) might have on the intended willingness to discuss issues during exit interviews, we asked managerial and nonmanagerial workers to evaluate their feelings toward particular aspects of work life as well as their willingness to discuss these issues during an exit interview. Results showed that status alone did not affect willingness to discuss issues but that feelings toward a topic and status had an interactive effect on willingness to discuss an issue.
