Research, Development, and Demonstration of Solid Polymer Fuel Cell Systems

David S. Watkins

Solid polymer fuel cells (SPFC) go by many names. General Electric (GE), the original developers, referred to ion exchange membrane (IEM) Fuel Cells in the early stages. Later they were given the GE (now United Technologies Corporation/Hamilton Standard) trademark name SPE for solid polymer electrolyte. Recently, the name proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells has been used by many developers. This chapter will use SPFC.
