Despite studies exploring potential applications of unmanned aerial systems (UASs), the particular use and value of visual assets (photographs or video) collected with UASs for construction management tasks is not well understood. This paper presents an exploratory case study to identify potential applications of visual assets obtained from UASs for construction management tasks. The case study involved the development of a visual assets database from UAS-based images and videos collected during UAS flights at jobsites in the United States and Brazil as well as semi-structured interviews with construction project personnel. The results revealed potential applications of UASs mainly for project progress monitoring, job site logistics, evaluating safety conditions, and quality inspections among other secondary management tasks. In addition, an analysis of costs related to the use of UASs was performed. The main contribution of this case study is a better understanding of the use of UASs for construction management tasks and their regulatory and cost implications.

A industria da construcao civil apresenta-se como um dos segmentos industriais mais criticos no que se refere aos impactos ambientais, sendo o principal gerador de residuos solidos da sociedade. Neste sentido, a cidade de Salvador, Bahia, e caracterizada pela geracao de grande volume de residuos de construcao civil, pelo esgotamento das areas para recepcao dos residuos gerados pela atividade construtiva e pela inexistencia de areas de transbordo, de triagem e de usinas para reciclagem. O presente trabalho apresenta uma proposta de sistematizacao para o processo de reciclagem de residuos de construcao classe A em canteiros de obra, considerando aspectos tecnicos, economicos e ambientais. O processo de reciclagem foi estruturado e validado por meio da realizacao de tres estudos de caso de experiencia de reciclagem em canteiros de obra de Salvador, utilizando equipamento movel de britagem. Foram desenvolvidos um fluxograma e um procedimento operacional para apoiar a realizacao da reciclagem nos canteiros, assim como foram gerados parâmetros para avaliacao do referido processo. Este trabalho mostra o potencial da reciclagem em canteiros de obras como uma alternativa para a destinacao dos residuos de construcao civil, indicando acoes que facilitem a adocao dessa pratica, de forma a contribuir para a reducao dos impactos ambientais causados pelo descarte inadequado dos residuos de construcao.

Os ultimos anos, diversas iniciativas tem sido realizadas para o desenvolvimento de clubes de benchmarking e sistemas de indicadores de desempenho para benchmarking , em diferentes paises . Estes clubes podem ser considerados como grupos colaborativos, nos quais diferentes empresas podem adquirir e compartilhar conhecimentos visando a implementar melhorias. Entretanto, ainda sao escassos os estudos que discutem sob quais condicoes estes processos colaborativos mostram-se eficazes e os reais beneficios alcancados pelas empresas. O presente artigo tem como objetivo principal apresentar os fatores chaves de sucesso para a construcao de sistemas de indicadores para benchmarking por meio de processo colaborativo entre empresas construtoras. Este artigo apresenta ainda a definicao de um conjunto de indicadores para benchmarking , uma estrutura para avaliacao do grau de maturidade dos sistemas de indicadores das empresas construtoras participantes, assim como a identificacao das melhorias implementadas nos sistemas de indicadores pelas empresas. No presente trabalho, foi utilizada a estrategia da pesquisa-acao, tendo sido realizado um estudo com um grupo de vinte empresas de construcao, as quais formaram um clube de benchmarking . Buscou-se neste grupo, por meio de um processo de benchmarking colaborativo, o desenvolvimento de um sistema de medicao para comparacao de desempenho e, posteriormente, o compartilhamento de praticas relacionadas a implementacao de indicadores e a processos gerenciais selecionados pelas empresas participantes. A principal contribuicao deste artigo e a identificacao dos fatores chave que influenciam a construcao de sistemas de indicadores atraves de benchmarking colaborativo e as implicacoes deste processo nas empresas construtoras participantes.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the impacts of using gamification techniques to improve transparency of production assignments and worker performance and to increase the engagement of construction workers. Design/methodology/approach The research strategy is based on design science research. A web tool called Gamified Construction Project System was designed, implemented and evaluated through empirical studies. Findings The effectiveness of game mechanics used in the GamifiedSystem, such as the point system, the badge, the leaderboard and the feedbacks loops, improved the communication of weekly tasks, rules and policies through better information transparency; the system also motivated the workers to be more engaged and to improve their performance to win the game. Originality/value The main contribution of this study is the incorporation of gamification techniques in the visual management construction field and the adherence of the workforce to production tasks and rules.

Unmanned aerial systems (UASs) have been increasingly considered for use in the architecture, engineering, construction and facility management (AEC+FM) domain. In particular, UASs have the potential for integration with safety control processes during the construction phase. This technology can transfer visual assets, such as images and videos obtained from UASs, to safety management personnel in real time before potentially hazardous situations occur. This paper aims to identify the user requirements, operational challenges, potential factors influencing the performance of UASs, and potential performance measures on construction site environments. In this study, qualitative survey responses are collected from 19 construction project professionals. The main findings showed four main requirements and three main challenges from a user’s perspective in order to implement UASs on construction sites. In addition, 31 potential factors and 17 performance measures of UASs were identified with their importance based on mean ranking scores. “Ease of user interface for UAS operation” and “quality of visual assets” were identified as the most important factors influencing the performance of UASs for safety inspection tasks in construction jobsites. The main contribution is to define the factors that may affect their performance of UAS integrated construction safety controls.

As usinas de reciclagem de residuos da construcao civil (RCC) no Brasil produzem agregado reciclado com alta variabilidade mineral e baixa empregabilidade. Suas atividades dependem da construcao civil e das diretrizes para producao do agregado reciclado, com foco na substituicao ao agregado natural. Este trabalho identifica fatores criticos para a producao de agregado reciclado em usinas de reciclagem de RCC por meio da avaliacao das usinas da regiao Nordeste do Brasil, conforme a norma NBR 15114 (ABNT, 2004b). A pesquisa foi dividida em tres etapas. Na primeira, foi estabelecida a fundamentacao teorica do estudo. Na segunda fase, foram realizadas visitas as usinas para entrevistas, levantamento fotografico e observacao visual. Na ultima, os dados coletados foram analisados a luz das diretrizes brasileiras para producao de agregado reciclado. Como resultado, identificou-se que as usinas visitadas sofrem interferencias negativas na producao decorrente da gestao dos residuos da construcao civil. Observou-se, ainda, que as usinas avaliadas apresentaram nao conformidades em relacao aos requisitos da NBR 15114. A contribuicao principal deste trabalho e a identificacao de fatores criticos e proposicoes para a producao do agregado reciclado com pureza mineral e maior empregabilidade.

A liter...ABSTRACT Target Value Design (TVD) is a management practice used in programing, design, detailing and construction to ensure that projects meet the operational needs and values of its users. A literature review revealed that TVD has been primarily studied in a narrow and specific context, and there is still a lack of TVD information as it relates to real estate development. This work aimed to evaluate the project definition and design phase of a real estate development under the framework of TVD theory, and propose guidelines for the implementation of TVD practices. This research, which was based on a case study in Brazil, involved the following stages: (a) understanding the real estate project definition process based on TVD theory, (b) evaluating the level of TVD application, and (c) analyzing the potential for implementing TVD practices. The primary findings identified the weaknesses and strengths of the project phases and processes, and then analyzed the viability of TVD implementation in real estate development. The theoretical contribution of this study is a better understanding of how TVD can be translated to and used in a new context. For practical implications, a set of guidelines is proposed for the implementation of TVD within real estate development contexts and projects with similar characteristics.

Due to the complexity and dynamism that characterize construction activities, the execution of work packages as planned requires a systematic monitoring and control of their operations and progress. However, the most common practices for construction progress monitoring are still based on individual observations and often still rely on textbased documentation. In order to improve the collaboration and transparency of this process, studies highlight applications of visual data, such as photographs, videos, 3D and 4D models. Due to the large number of publications that address the use of visual data for construction progress monitoring, and the growing use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), the objective of this work is to present a systematic literature review concerning the use of UAVs as a tool for aiding construction progress monitoring. For that purpose, a literature review was carried out for papers dated from 2008 to 2018 using Scopus database. The findings indicated that the development of progress monitoring automated systems, the use of 3D as-built point cloud models and Building Information Modeling are the most frequently discussed subjects within the papers surveyed. Also, a gap was identified regarding the lack of studies that effectively integrate the visual monitoring with the construction management systems.

O sistema de impermeabilizacao nos edificios residenciais passou a ser objeto de preocupacao de muitas empresas construtoras, em funcao dos reparos em obras, que, com frequencia, resultam em danos a outros componentes. Grande parte deste problema esta associado a gestao inadequada deste processo desde o projeto ate a sua aplicacao. O presente artigo tem como objetivo principal sistematizar o processo de identificacao de problemas relacionados a gestao de projeto, aquisicao e execucao do sistema de impermeabilizacao, a partir de uma estrutura de analise com foco no fluxo de informacao, no desperdicio e no atendimento as normas em vigor. A pesquisa foi baseada em 16 entrevistas com projetistas de sistemas de impermeabilizacao, e representantes de empresas construtoras e de sub-contratadas de impermeabilizacao, analise de documentos, e oito visitas a obras. Os resultados mostraram a necessidade de uma maior integracao entre os participantes do processo de impermeabilizacao, com foco na capacitacao, transparencia dos processos e controle da producao. As principais contribuicoes do presente trabalho referem-se a concepcao de uma estrutura para sistematizacao dos problemas na execucao de sistemas de impermeabilizacao, e as recomendacoes para melhoria da gestao deste processo, visando a atender aos requisitos normativos e reduzir perdas.
