Simultaneous analysis of esters and acylglycerols in biodiesel by high-performance liquid chromatography with refractive index detection

ABSTRACT Currently, gas chromatography (GC) is the most widely used analytical technique to verify the quality of biodiesel in relation to its glyceride and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) contents, even though its use has some disadvantages, such as damage to the injector and column caused by the presence of trace levels of triacylglycerols in biodiesel, which means the column has to be replaced every 3 months; the need for the sample to be derivatized, which, while improving chromatographic separation, also increases analysis time; and the use of several imported standard solutions. The main aim of this work was to use high-performance liquid chromatography with refractive index detection (HPLC-RI) to simultaneously quantify the glyceride (mono, di, and triacylglycerol) and FAME contents of biodiesel. The proposed method showed satisfactory results when compared with those obtained by the reference method (GC), particularly when these results were within the working ranges of the reference method. The proposed method using HPLC-RI is therefore promising and could potentially be used instead of the reference method, since the results it yielded were statistically equivalent, with 95% confidence, to the results obtained by the reference method (GC) for the nine samples of commercial biodiesel analyzed in this study. The aim of this paper was to use colorimetric assays for hydroxamic acid to quantify the biodiesel content in diesel and compare it with the traditional method (infrared spectroscopy, using the EN 14078 method). Samples were prepared from B2 to B10 with two kinds of diesel - S500 (red) and S50 (yellow) - to obtain two calibration curves. Through statistical methods it was shown that the slopes of the straight lines obtained for the different types of diesel were the same. Thus, the type of diesel did not influence the results of the colorimetric assay for hydroxamic acid. Real samples collected from gas stations were analyzed by both methods (colorimetry and EN 14078). By applying Students t-test it was concluded that the methods could be considered statistically equivalent. Therefore, it was confirmed that the colorimetric assay for hydroxamic acid is suitable for detecting and quantifying the content of biodiesel in biodiesel/diesel blends and can also be easily adapted to field analyses.

Interlaboratorial comparison of the determination of hardness and chloride in water had been performed by 38 and 37 laboratories, respectively. In all cases the participating laboratories used its routine methods. Homogeneity and stability testing were performed on the samples sent to the laboratories. The codified results are graphically reported and compared to assigned value, determined by the consensus of the laboratories. Satisfactory results were obtained for 71 and 73% of the laboratories, considering hardness and chloride determination, respectively.
