Managing Work and Family: The Decision to Outsource Child Care in Families Engaged in Family-Owned Businesses

Rosemary J. Avery; Deborah C. Haynes; George W. Haynes

This study investigates the decision to outsource child care among families involved in family-owned businesses. A management framework is used to examine the impact of inputs to the decision (i.e., goals and resources) and level of management activity (i.e., planning and implementing) in these families as predictors of the choice to outsource child care. The data are a sub-sample of the data from a project entitled, “Family Businesses: Interaction in Work and Family Spheres” (Winter, Fitzgerald, Heck, Haynes, & Danes, 1998) undertaken in 1997. Study findings indicate that household managers who work in the family business are less likely to outsource child care compared to those who work outside the family business. More educated household managers purchased more, and managers in larger families fewer hours of child care. Female household managers purchased significantly fewer hours of child care compared to their male counterparts.

“How Can You Retire When You Still Got a Kid in School?”: Economics of Raising Grandchildren in Rural Areas

Sandra J. Bailey; Deborah C. Haynes; Bethany L. Letiecq

Increasingly, grandparents are being called on to rear their grandchildren when parents are unable or unwilling to fulfill their parenting role. These grandparent caregivers often find themselves in an economic bind. Financially, most are at a stage in life where they are looking toward retirement and reduced family spending and are unprepared for their new economic reality as second-time-around caregivers. Here, we use a framework of family financial well-being to examine the economic consequences of rearing grandchildren. Based on family life interviews with 26 grandfamilies residing in Montana, we explore the challenges grandparents experience generating and shifting income streams in later life, the variability in received income, and the array of expected and unexpected expenses incurred as a result of taking in their grandchildren. As custodial grandparents strive for financial well-being, there are few resources—especially in rural areas—to help them navigate these new financial waters.

Management Issues of Business-Owning Families

George W. Haynes; Sharon M. Danes; Deborah C. Haynes

This chapter summarizes the literature at the intersection of family and business for households owning a family business. While it may appear that these business-owning households earn higher income and accumulate more wealth, they face the challenges of managing the family/business interface. This chapter utilizes the Sustainable Family Business Model to carefully assesses two critically important dimensions: financial interface, where financial and human resources (typically labor) move between the family and business, and interpersonal relationships interface, where tensions between the family and business must be addressed for the family and business to survive and succeed.

Business-Owning Families: Challenges at the Intersection of Business and Family

Sharon M. Danes; George W. Haynes; Deborah C. Haynes

This chapter summarizes the literature at the intersection of family and business for households owning a family business. While it may appear that these business-owning households earn higher income and accumulate more wealth, they face the challenges of managing the family/business interface. This chapter utilizes the Sustainable Family Business Theory (SFBT) to carefully assess how human, social, and financial capitals are used within the family business to support both the family and business. A special case is examined where SFBT is applied to couples starting a business.
