Instructional Communication Competence: Lessons Learned from Award-Winning Teachers

Responding to calls for more holistic views on instructional communication, this study used interpretive methods to examine award-winning instructors communicative practices to assess and to refine a definition of instructional communication competence. After observing and interviewing recipients of the Central States Communication Association Outstanding New Teacher Award, we describe how these award-winning teachers (a) understand the ebb and flow of the classroom, (b) use a wide repertoire of communication skills, (c) create relationships with students, and (d) effectively manage their classroom climates.

The Critical Role of Stewardship in Fund Raising: The Coaches vs. Cancer Campaign.

Abstract This article examines the critical role of stewardship in the process of fund raising. In an analysis of the Coaches vs. Cancer campaign, the authors illustrate the limitations of the public relations ROPE model in explaining fund raising success, and support Kelly’s contention that addition of a fifth step to the model, the stewardship step, better explains campaign effectiveness.

Teaching the Public Relations Campaigns Course.

Abstract This article argues for the inclusion of a Campaign Planning course in the undergraduate public relations major, and discusses suggested course objectives, structure, and content. Unique aspects of this applied public relations course are considered, and recommendations are given to prospective instructors in how to handle identifying (clients) and assisting students in developing effective client-team relationships. Finally, the article includes suggestions on assisting students with finalizing portfolios and assisting them with career preparation.
