OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study is to show how sonography can reveal pathology of the eye and to highlight its usefulness as a simple and cost-effective tool in investigating eye symptoms. CONCLUSION The cystic nature of the eye, its superficial location, and high-frequency transducers make it possible to clearly show normal anatomy and pathology such as tumors, retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, foreign bodies, and vascular malformations. Sonography is useful as a treatment follow-up technique because it has no adverse effects. Sonography is well tolerated by patients and relatively easy to perform for those familiar with real-time sonography.

The three most important contributing factors for the development of DVT were initially described by the German pathologist Rudolf Virchow in 1856: (1) stasis, (2) endothelial injury, and (3) hypercoagulability. These have been termed as ‘‘Virchow’s triad.’’ Most predisposing factors for the development of DVT, such as surgery, indwelling venous catheters, and pregnancy, have one or more of these three factors in play. Patients who are critically ill or patients with cancer are particularly prone to DVT.

A 33-year-old man had clinical features of a right renal abscess. Results of excretory urography and ultrasonography showed a focal complex mass lesion in the right kidney. An ln-111 leukocyte scan failed to detect the right renal abscess, which later was aspirated under CT guidance and explored surgically. The role of ln-111 leukocyte imaging in the detection of intra-abdominal abscesses, with limitations of the procedure, is discussed.

Three cases of pseudocysts occurring after splenectomy are presented. Sonography and computed tomography were helpful in diagnosing the pseudocysts as well as providing guidance for subsequent drainage. Demonstration of a cystic mass adjacent to the tail of the pancreas following splenectomy suggests the diagnosis of postsplenectomy pseudocyst and has important implications for clinical management.
