Research with the aim to understand the conception of therapeutic listening in clinical mental health care nursing. Qualitative study carried out with nine nurses inserted into mental health services. Data were generated by semi-structured interviews and assessed by Michel Pecheuxs discourse analysis. The research identified that the listening process is devoid of its therapeutic potential. It is only conceived as a means to obtain information on the subject in psychological distress, a practice that, in summary, is specifically correlated to objectified signs and symptoms at the patients body. Occasionally, such practice is guided by a psychosocial framework. The listening practice is not in harmony with the principles of the psychiatric reform, as it does not allow for the inclusion of the subject in the care process, and even disregards the patients speech as an expression of his existence-suffering. Although it contains elements of the psychosocial framework, the listening practice is actually limited to addressing the mental suffering, with no recognition whatsoever of the suffering individual.Research with the aim to understand the conception of therapeutic listening in clinical mental health care nursing. Objective: This study aimed to identify the theoretical references that guide clinical practice in mental health nursing. Methods: Descriptive study of qualitative approach, conducted through semi-structured interviews. The study subjects were nurses working in Psychosocial Care Centers of Fortaleza/CE. It was used the analysis of content of Bardin. Results: Five categories emerged that link the theoretical references that guide the clinical practice of nurses: nursing theories referential, biomedical referential; alternative practices referential; referential of harm-reduction policy, and psychoanalysis reference. Conclusion: It was identified that the professional practice of the most of the respondents was guided by more than one of these references, although some present contradictions between them, and this was not perceived by the subjects. These references, at times, were applied only formally, without the purpose of reception of the subject in psychological distress and their care demands. Objective: This study aimed to identify the theoretical references that guide clinical practice in mental health nursing. Aim: to understand the practices of nurses in urgent and emergency service for people experiencing psychic crisis resulting from drug abuse. Method: this is a descriptive research, with a qualitative approach, performed with 19 nurses who work in the emergency room of a general hospital in the countryside of Rio Grande do Norte. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, and then submitted to content analysis. Results: nurses highlight that they focus on the signs and symptoms of the psychic crisis or use listening as an instrument of practice, and they also reported that the difficulties faced by them are the the prejudice against the drug user, the lack of training in the field of mental health and the inappropriate physical structure of the hospital. Conclusion: there is a need for nurses’ qualification so that they can care for people who abuse drugs and for a greater engagement of the services that comprise the Psychosocial Care Network.

Abstract Objective: To verify the pattern of alcohol use among the elderly attending a primary health care service and to describe the relationship between the use of alcohol and sociodemographic variables. Methods: Observational, cross-sectional, quantitative study with elderly patients from a primary health care service in a city in the interior of São Paulo/Brazil. Of 750 elderly subjects in total, 112 were included, 85 were interviewed, and the fi nal sample was comprised of 25 subjects who self-reported alcohol use. Data of the study were obtained through interviews for application of the following instruments: sociodemographic questionnaire, Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test-Geriatric Version (MAST-G); and Alcohol Use Disorders Identifi cation Test (AUDIT). Results: There was predominance of the female gender (56%), retirees (56%), mean age was 69.8 years (60-83 years range), educational level of 7.4 years of study, on average, ranging from no education to complete higher education. Fifteen elderly (60%) scored between 8 and 14 points in the AUDIT, which is risk use; and 10 (40%) had a score of 7 points, considered low risk use. In MAST-G, the 25 patients (100%) suggest the presence of problems related to alcohol use. Conclusion: The study contributes to the situation of alcohol use by the elderly. This is based on the existence of a greater number of women at risk in the population studied. These issues should be considered in health professionals’ approach and investigations with a view to adopting strategies for the global and humanized treatment of elderly alcohol users.
