In this study the composition and antimicrobial properties of essential oils obtained fromOriganum onites, Mentha piperita, Juniperus exalsa, Chrysanthemum indicum, Lavandula hybrida, Rosa damascena, Echinophora tenuifolia, Foeniculum vulgare were examined. To evaluate thein vitro antibacterial activities of these eight aromatic extracts; theirin vitro antimicrobial activities were determined by disk diffusion testing, according to the NCCLS criteria.Escherichia coli (ATTC 25922J,Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923) andPseudomonas aeruginosa (ATTC 27853 were used as standard test bacterial strains.Origanum onites recorded antimicrobial activity against all test bacteria, and was strongest againstStaphylococcus aureus. ForRosa damascena, Mentha piperita andLavandula hybrida antimicrobial activity was recorded only toStaphylococcus aureus. Juniperus exalsa, and Chrysanthemum indicum exhibited antibacterial activities against bothStaphylococcus aureus andEscherichia coli. We also examined thein vitro antimicrobial activities of some components of the essential oils and found some components with antimicrobial activity.

STUDY OBJECTIVE To investigate whether frequency of persistent ectopic pregnancy after linear salpingotomy can be reduced by prophylactic administration of a single intraoperative injection of local methotrexate. DESIGN Prospective, randomized, controlled trial (Canadian Task Force classification I). SETTING University-affiliated hospital. PATIENTS Sixty-five women with unruptured ectopic pregnancy. INTERVENTION Laparoscopic salpingotomy with or without a single intratubal dose of methotrexate 1 mg/kg. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS In the prophylaxis group, 22 patients received a single dose of intratubal methotrexate 1 mg/kg after linear salpingotomy; 43 controls had only linear salpingotomy. Six women (14%) in the control group developed persistent ectopic pregnancy, compared with none in the prophylaxis group (p <0.05). CONCLUSION In our opinion, intratubal methotrexate injection during laparoscopic salpingotomy is a practical option for women with unruptured ectopic pregnancy.

The effect of sodium monofluorophosphate therapy on lipid and lipoprotein metabolism in postmenopausal women

Baha Oral; Demir Ozbasar

OBJECTIVE To investigate the effect of a low dose of fluoride, combined with hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or alone, on serum lipids and lipoproteins in postmenopause. STUDY DESIGN One hundred and thirty-five healthy postmenopausal women were enrolled in this prospective study and randomly assigned to: (1) oral monofluorophosphate (MFP, 25 mg per day); or (2) HRT (a combination of oral conjugated estrogen 0.625 mg in conjunction with medroxyprogesterone acetate 5 mg daily); or (3) HRT + MFP; or (4) placebo, for 18 months. Serum lipid and lipoprotein levels were measured at enrollment and at the end of the study period. RESULTS Total cholesterol was not significantly different among groups, with a decrease in the HRT and the HRT + MFP groups (respectively, -7.8 and -7.9%), and a small increase in the MFP group (0.4%). LDL-C did not differ significantly in the groups, with a decrease in the HRT and HRT + MFP groups (respectively, -10.3 and -10.4%), and a slight increase in the MFP group (0.8%). TG decreased with -12 and 11.8% in the HRT and HRT + MFP groups (P = 0.052 and 0.055, respectively), but a slight increase was seen in the MFP group (1.4%). For HDL-C, both HRT and HRT+MFP groups showed a small increase (respectively, 3.5 and 3.6%), whereas MFP group showed a slight decrease (-0.9%, NS). CONCLUSION We conclude that long-term use of a low dose of fluoride had no significant adverse changes in the lipid and lipoprotein profile in postmenopause. It neither attenuated nor potentiated the effect of HRT on lipids and lipoproteins.

Abstract We report a girl with parathyroid agenesis. The gross anomaly of the long bones was diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound. Pregnancy was terminated at 24 weeks of gestation. There were no other apparent system anomalies except parathyroid gland agenesis and long bone abnormalities. This case is the first reported case of parathyroid agenesis with normal thyroid glands and other systems.

SuleymanDemirel Universitesi TIP FAKULTESI DERGISI: 1998Mart; 5(1) Ikinci Trimesterde Vajinal Kanama ile Komplike Gebeliklerde Ultrasonografik Bulgularin Perinatal Sonuc ile Iliskisi Baha Oral Meltem Cetin Cagatay Gocen Demir Ozabasar OZET Amacimiz ikinci trimesterde vajinal kanamasi olan hastalarda ultrasonografik bulgular ile perinatal sonuc ara¬sindaki iliskiyi saptamakti. Prospektif bir vaka-kontrol calismasi yapildi. Kanama nedeniyle 13-26. gebelik haftalari arasinda ultrasonogra¬fik inceleme yapilan 102 hasta belirlendi. Baslica ultrasonografik bulgular, intrauterin pihti varligi, zarlarin ayrilma¬si ve plasenta previa idi. 102 kanamasiz hasta kontrol grubu olarak secildi. Her iki grup icin perinatal sonuclara ilis¬kin degerler kaydedildi, istatistiksel analiz, kategorik degiskenler icin X2 analizi ve surekli degiskenler icin t testi ile yapildi. Relative risk (RR) ve %95 guven araliklari (GA) hesaplandi. Gruplar arasinda ortalama yas, onceki preterm dogum ve sigara yonunden onemsiz farklar mevcuttu. Multipari-te (l <parite<4) kanamali hastalarda kontrollere gore daha sik idi (p=0.0145). Ikinci trimesterde vajinal kanama, art¬mis preterm dogum (RR 2.05, %95 GA 1.25-335), fetal olum (RR 4, %95 GA 1.16-13.75) ve perinatal olum (RR 3, %95 GA 1.24-7.24) riski ile iliskili idi. Perinatal monalite hizi kontrollerdeki 59:1000 oranina karsin, bu hastalarda 176:1000 idi. Vajinal kanamali hastalar arasinda anormal ultrasonografik bulguya sahip olanlar, artmis preterm do¬gum (RR 2.10, %95 GA 1.16-3.78), fetal olum (RR 6.17, %95 GA 1.41-26.93), perinatal olum (4.13, %95 GA 1.44-11.83) ve neonatal yogun bakim unitesine yatirilma (RR 5.98, %95 GA 1.83-19.48) riskine sahipti. Bazi istenmeyen perinatal sonuclara, ozellikle de lethal komplikasyonlara ait risk, ikinci trimester kanamali has¬talar arasinda anlamli olarak artmistir. Anahtar Kelimeler: Ikinci trimester kanamasi, gebelikte ultrasonografi, yuksek riskli gebelik. ABSTRACT CORRELATION OF ULTRASONOGRAPfflC FINDINGS VVTTH PERINATAL OUTCOME IN PREG-NANCIES COMPLICATED BY SECOND-TRIMESTER VAGINAL BLEEDING Our purpose was to determine the relationship between ulirasonographic findings and perinatal outcome in pa-tients with second-trimester vaginal bleeding. ikinci Trimesterde Vaginal Kanama ile Komplike Gebeliklerde Ultrasonografik Bulgular/ Oral, Cetin, Gocen, Ozbasar. A prospective case-control study was performed. One hundred and two patients with ultrasonographic examina-tions performedfor bleeding between 13-26 week s gestation \vere identified. The main ultrasonographic findings ne¬re the presence of an intrauterine clot, membrane separation, and placenta previa. One hundred and two non-ble-eding patients were chosen as the control group. Perinatal outcome measuresfor both groups were recorded. Statis-tical analysis was performed with X2 analysisfor categorical variables and the t test for continuous variables. Rela-tive risks and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated. There were insignificant differences between the groups for mean age, previous premature delivery, and smoking. Multiparity (l<para<4) was more common in patients with bleeding than in controls (p=0.0145). Second-trimester vaginal bleeding was associated with increased risk ofpreterm delivery (KR 2.05, 95% CI 125 to 335),fetal death (RR 4, 95% CI 1.16 to 13.75), and perinatal death (RR 3, 95% CI 124 to 7.24). The perinatal mortality rate was 176:1000 in these patients versus 59:1000 in controls. Among the patients with vaginal bleeding those with abnormal ultrasonographic findings had an increased risk ofpreterm delivery (RR 2.10, 95% CI 1.16 to 3.78),fetal death (RR 6.17, 95% CI 1.41 to 26.93), perinatal death (RR 4.13, 95% CI 1.44 to 11.83), and neonatal intensive care unit ad-missions (RR 5.98, 95% CI1.83 to 19.49). The risk ofcertain adverse perinatal outcomes, particularly lethal complications, is significantly increased among patients with bleeding during the second trimester. Key Words: Second-trimester bleeding, ultrasonography in pregnancy, high-risk pregnancy.
