The meso-octaethylporphyrinogen tetraanion provides σ and π binding pyrrolyl anions to electron poor transition metals, as shown in the structure of the meso-octaethylporphyrinogen–zirconium(IV) complex containing two η5 and two σ metal-bonded pyrrolyl anions.

meso-Octamethyl-porphyrinogen metal complexes: an entry to high valent unsaturated metal centres

The meso-octamethyl porphyrinogen tetraanion has been used to bind iron(III) and oxomolybdenum(V) ions; X-ray analysis revealed the interaction of a square-planar tetracoordinate FeIII and the oxo group in the MoV complex with the meso-methyls.

p-tert-Butylcalix[4] arene has been converted into the corresponding tetra (diphenylphosphinite) derivative which has a cone conformation; reaction with [Fe(CO)3(η2-C8H14)2] led to binding of two Fe(CO)3 units, as confirmed by X-ray analysis, at the surface provided by the four trivalent phosphorus donors.
