Gandhi: Ideology and Authority

The purpose of this article is to analyse Gandhis ideology and more particularly his understanding of authority. The first part will consider the main elements of Gandhis ideology as they emerged during his nationalist experience, and their relationship to his style of leadership. The second part will turn to a comparative analysis of Gandhi and Rousseau, in an attempt to illuminate further implications of Gandhis conception of authority.

to cover employment discrimination and are influencing the current debate on equal pay for women. But a trade union course on equal employment opportunity needs to be more specific and localised than this manual. Although the material is clearly set out, the solemn words of international documents make for dull reading. The T.U.C. and the Institute for Personnel Management could make a worthwhile practical contribution by commissioning another manual on the situation in the U.K. to complement this one. Together, these manuals could provide an excellent basis for courses on equal opportunity which ought to be provided by every institution charged with the training of management and workers.
