South African fungi: the genus Amanita

Derek A. Reid; A. Eicker

Thirteen species of Amanita have been recorded from South Africa, two wrongly, namely A. citrina and A. strobiliformis ( solitaria ); descriptions are given of the remainder. A. excelsa, A. muscaria, A. pantherina, A. phalloides and A. rubescens are considered to be of European origin. A. praeclara and A. roseolescens are regarded as native, as are two new taxa, A. foetidissima and A. veldiei , together with A. pleropus for which the first comprehensive account is provided. A discussion of A. praetoriae is included.

A revision of the british species of Naucoria sensu lato

Derek A. Reid

A revision of the species of Naucoria s.l. included in the British ‘Check List’ (1960) is presented. Species are redistributed between the genera Galerina, Naucoria, Phaeogalera , and Simocybe . Full descriptions to genera and species, text-figures of the micro-structures, and keys to the species of Naucoria, Phaeogalera , and Simocybe are provided. The new species, Naucoria albotomentosa, N. pseudoscolecina, N. salicetorum, N. silvae-novae, N. spadicea, Galerina phillipsii and the new combination, Simocybe obscura (Romagn.) Reid (= N. centunculus var. obscura Romagn.) are proposed.

New or interesting British plant diseases

Derek A. Reid

Three new species are described: Exobasidiellum culmigenum on Dactylis glomerata and Thanatephorus langlei-regis on Plantago lanceolata , neither fungus being thought to be actively parasitic; and Cytosporium pittospori , which appears to be parasitic on the leaf-hairs of Pittosporum crassifolium . The following pathogenic fungi are recorded from the British Isles for the first time: Rhamphospora nymphaeae on Nymphaea alba, Cercospora exitiosa on Tilia europaea var. pallida, Peronospora cristata on Meconopsis cambrica and P. valesiaca on Euphorbia paralias . Accounts are also given of Exobasidium camelliae on Camellia japonica, Urocystis primulicola on Primula vulgaris, Ustilago intermedia on Scabiosa columbaria, Cronartium flaccidum on Paeonia sp., Taphrina athyrii on Dryopteris spp., T. carpini on Carpinus sp., Ovulinia azaleae on Rhododendron naomi-orphia and of an oedematous condition of the leaves of Tibouchina semidecandra .

The Leucocoprinus badhamii complex in Europe: species which redden on bruising or become green in ammonia fumes

Derek A. Reid

A key is provided to the European taxa of the Leucocoprinus badhamii complex, followed by accounts of the nine species and two varieties which comprise the group. Two new taxa are described, L. caldariorum sp. n. and L. croceovelutinus var. diversisporus var. nov. L. caldariorum, L. croceovelutinus var. croceovelutinus, L. croceovelutinus var. diversisporus, L. pilatianus var. pilatianus and L. pilatianus var. subrubens are all new records for Britain. Doubt is expressed as to European reports of the occurrence of L. biornatus .

Derek A. Reid

Five new gasteromycetoid fungi are described: Agrogaster coneae gen. et sp.nov., Gasteroagaricoides ralstoniae gen. et sp.nov., Austrogaster novae-zelandiae sp.nov., Radiigera termitariicola sp.nov. and R. asperata sp.nov.

Further records of Jersey fungi

Derek A. Reid

Oudemansiella xeruloides, Lepiota helveola s. str. and Battarraea phalloides are fully described since they are new to the Channel Isles; the first two species have yet to be recorded from mainland Britain, while B. phalloides is extremely rare. Pleurotus ostreatus is recorded growing on the vertebra of a recently washed up sperm whale.

Notes on some Leucocoprinoid fungi from Britain

Derek A. Reid

The new taxa Leucocoprinus caeruleoviolaceus and L. lilacinogranulosus var. subglobisporus are described. Accounts are also given of Leucoagaricus cinerascens, Leucocoprinus lilacinogranulosus and L macrorhizus which are new to Britain. The holotype of Leucocoprinus ianthinus is described and the species compared with L. lilacinogranulosus .

An annotated list of some fungi from the Channel Islands, mostly from Jersey

Derek A. Reid

During a short visit to Jersey in April 1984 a number of fungi were collected, many of which seem to represent species hitherto unrecorded from the Channel Islands, since they do not appear in ‘A List of Jersey Fungi’ by Phillips & Phillips (1961) or in ‘Toadstools in Jersey’ by Upstone (1972). Such species are entered in the following list with an asterisk, and are 36 in number.

New or interesting fungi from Bulgaria

Derek A. Reid; Simeon Vanev

Eight species new to the Bulgarian fungus flora are described, including four Basidiomycetes belonging in the Aphyllophorales ( Erythricium hypnophilum, Laxitextum bicolor, Amylostereum laevigatum and Stereum insignitum ), one Ascomycete belonging in the Hysteriales ( Mytilidion rhenanum ), one member of the Deuteromycetes ( Lemalis aurea ), and two Myxomycetes ( Lamproderma carestiae and Physarum bitectum , belonging in Stemonitales and Physarales respectively). An account of Cenangium ferruginosum includes observations relating to its gelatinous structure, a feature often overlooked in modern descriptions.
