These books are written for the owner or manager of a small construction business. The handbook, like the workbook, is divided into ten chapters. Part A, the first five chapters deals with principles. The remainder of the book helps the reader to put these principles into practice. Chapter 1 summarizes the technical considerations, and also explains the most important engineering standards for earth and gravel roads. Chapter 2 provides an introduction to the choice of appropriate road construction and maintenance technology. Chapter 3 introduces the reader to basic soil mechanics. Chapter 4 deals with equipment, vehicles and tools. Chapter 5 describes the major operations in a typical labour based road project. Chapters 6 and 7 deal with road maintenance. Chapter 8 describes regravelling. Chapter 9 discusses pricing and bidding. Chapter 10 expounds upon the management of people.
