The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) and U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Mid-Pacific Region (Reclamation) have developed a rapid, interactive screening model, named CalLite, for evaluating various Central Valley water management options. The CalLite model is being used as a computer-aided negotiations tool in a variety of stakeholder’s processes for improved understanding of water system operations and consensus-based decision making. CalLite was developed using the GoldSim system dynamics software that enables simulation of complex process through a buildup of simple object relationships, incorporates Monte Carlo stochastic methods, and includes dynamic, interactive user interfaces. The screening tool models much of the Central Valley of California that contributes flow to the Delta. The geographical coverage includes the Upper Trinity River, the Sacramento River Valley, the San Joaquin River Valley, the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, and the Central Valley Project and the State Water Project ser...

Evaluation of Conservation Measures in the Upper San Pedro Basin

Derya Sumer; Kevin Lansey

Water resources management in Arizona is critical to the development and sustainability of local communities. Several regions in the state are facing immediate challenges to meet water demands. However, tools to assist the wide range of water interests understand the impact of decisions are lacking. This paper describes the development of a dynamic simulation based decision support system for the Upper San Pedro Partnership.

WDS calibration and assessment for alternative modelling objectives

Derya Sumer; Kevin Lansey

A water distribution system model may be developed for different purposes and the required prediction accuracy is not necessarily the same for each goal. As such, the number of data necessary to adequately calibrate a system for different purposes varies depending upon the intended use. To examine the impact of model purpose on the calibration process, a real system is modelled for two objectives: daily pump scheduling and system expansion design. Results indicate that an operation model can be calibrated with limited data since the sensitivity to decisions is small. A system expansion model requires more data since the design demand condition causes critical low pressures and model pressure predictions are strongly influenced by calibrated parameters.

Calibration of and Data Collection for Hydraulic Models for Alternative Model Purposes

Derya Sumer; Kevin Lansey

Numerical models of water distribution systems are constructed for various purposes. This paper analyzes the value of data for calibrating a model for three purposes; analysis, design and pump operations for a demonstration system. Comparisons are made using model prediction uncertainty and the change in design and operations cost as more data is collected and provided to the calibration process. It is clear that a model developed for one purpose may not be acceptable for other goals. In particular, a hydraulic model for a system expansion in which the flow distribution increases and changes must be well calibrated. This paper was presented at the 8th Annual Water Distribution Systems Analysis Symposium which was held with the generous support of Awwa Research Foundation (AwwaRF).
