Key Business Metrics that Drive Sustainability into the Organization

Sustainability can mean different things to different organizations, depending on their distinct business and stakeholder contexts. Thus, in developing a sustainability program, one must understand the sustainability-related aspira- tions, goals, and challenges both internal and external to the organization. This chapter describes how an organizations approach to sustainability can be devel- oped through understanding the interaction between the organization and the environmental and social systems in which it operates. Furthermore, it presents the GEMI Metrics Navigator TM process, a roadmap for identifying key sustainability issues and business metrics that can help an organization achieve its sustainability goals.
