Figure 1 shows the raw materials (monomers) and the polymer structure of Twaron. The fibre already exhibits a pronounced orientation of the rigid chain molecules along the fibre axis. According to the model proposed by Northolt (Figure 2), the para-aramid fibre is composed of fibrils arranged in parallel. Each fibril consists of a series of crystallites located one behind the other and oriented in a specific manner around the fibril axis. There is some weak interaction between the fibrils attributable, for instance, to hydrogen bonds.
