Ciencias Biologicas. This article analyzes the existing collaboration networks in the Brazilian scientific output in Evolutionary Biology, considering articles published during the period from 2000 to 2012 in journals indexed by Web of Science. The methodology integrates bibliometric techniques and Social Network Analysis resources to describe the growth of Brazilian scientific output and understand the levels, dynamics and structure of collaboration between authors, institutions and countries. The results unveil an enhancement and consolidation of collaborative relationships over time and suggest the existence of key institutions and authors, whose influence on research is expressed by the variety and intensity of the relationships established in the co-authorship of articles. International collaboration, present in more than half of the publications, is highly significant and unusual in Brazilian science. The situation indicates the internationalization of scientific output and the ability of the field to take part in the science produced by the international scientific community.

The Biomedical Sciences constitute an important field of research in Brazil, both by the study of typical local diseases and by focusing on subjects of universal interest. This study initially makes a survey of the institutionalization of Biomedical Sciences in Brazil and subsequently analyzes the geographical distribution of production and scientific collaboration in these areas in the country in order to understand the current settings of the field and the concentration and dispersion of research in the national territory. This is a bibliometric study based on articles published in the last decade (2006–2015) by Brazilian researchers in journals indexed in the Web of Science. The results show the concentration of production in a few states, especially Sao Paulo, present in almost 50% of the articles and the most collaborative among the federal units from other regions of the country. Another highlight is the state of Rio de Janeiro, the second most productive and responsible, along with Sao Paulo, for the five journals that most published Biomedical Sciences articles in the period under study. Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Parana and Santa Catarina are the next states in terms of productivity. Federal units of the same region or geographically close form collaboration clusters. Pernambuco and Espirito Santo are also states highlighted for their modes of production and collaborative role in their clusters. The country’s northern states are the least productive followed by those of the Northeast, which indicates the need for more public policies for scientific development of these regions. The conclusion says that geographical proximity is an important factor in cooperation and even productivity considering that federal units that are more productive are close to each other and show huge collaboration between them.

The international dimensions of contemporary science have significantly impacted production and use patterns of scientific knowledge, which, in turn, requires new insights of librarians, publishers and academic institutions. Despite the recognized importance of internationality in science, studies on the internationalization of scientific output are still limited and dedicated exclusively to analyzing of its diffusion and international collaboration. This study analyzes the national/international character of articles, international collaboration, references and citations of Brazilian scientific output in Evolutionary Biology in order to understand the contribution to the internationalization of science in Brazil. Analyses are based on data from the Science Citation Index of Web of Science and include 1450 articles, 60,454 references and 18,059 citing documents. Results reveal similar internationality patterns, with 99.6% of articles published in foreign journals, 90.5% international references, and 88.5% international citations. Despite recording the lowest value among the indicators (51.9%), international collaboration surpasses the national and international average and is an important characteristic in the field in Brazil, contributing to increasing the number of references and the impact of articles. Evolutionary Biology is considered a predominantly international field, whose internationality patterns increase the audience for the studies and provide greater visibility for Brazilian science.

This article presents the evaluation of the performance of the journal Em Questao in the years that range from 2003 to 2012 based on the Qualis criteria. The methodology is both qualitative and quantitative and the research corpus is composed of articles, editorials and expedients published in the period, as well as of the general analysis of issues. The results reveal the efforts of the editorial teams to qualify the journal over time and indicate further improvements necessary to obtain higher strata in future evaluations of the Qualis Periodicos. The analysis also provided input for the elaboration of a checklist of evaluation of the adequacy of the journal to the Qualis criteria for the area of Applied Social Sciences. The instrument is presented at the end of the article and can guide the work of editors in relation to the control items to be followed for the qualification of journals in this area.
