The Influence of Current Stress on Dissociative Experiences: An Exploratory Study in a Non-Clinical Population

ABSTRACT In this study, the relationship between current stress, as perceived by an individual, and dissociative phenomena is explored. All subjects were in an acute and naturally caused stress-situation-sudden threat of dismissal from their jobs in a large multinational corporation. Dissociation and stress were measured at two different times over three months. Since information campaigns and psychological support programs were offered to all participants, levels of stress were expected to decrease significantly. The data show that dissociative experiences are elevated when subjects experience high levels of current stress, though scores fall within the normal non-pathological range. Furthermore, it appears that a decrease in stress level is associated with a significant decrease of dissociative symptoms. The results support a one-directional causal relationship: a decrease in perceived stress leads to a decrease in dissociative phenomena.

The incidence of reported trauma in children was not higher when parents report trauma themselves. A relationship was found between trauma and dissociation on the one hand and memories of parental rearing behaviour (‘overprotection’ and ‘warmth’) on the other hand. SamenvattingDe literatuur over dissociatieve verschijnselen richt zich bijna zonder uitzondering op de relatie tussen dissociatie en traumatische gebeurtenissen uit het verleden (Goodwin & Sachs, 1996). Als gevolg hiervan heeft een eenvoudig lineair trauma-dissociatiemodel een soort ‘objectieve werkelijkheidswaarde’ gekregen in klinische milieus. Zo ontstond een individueel georiënteerd behandelmodel dat sterk gericht is op het doorwerken van traumatische ervaringen uit het verleden.

SamenvattingEen oudere collega, een autoriteit op het gebied van de hypnotherapie, stelde mij de vraag of ik een patiënte wou zien met een moeilijke situatie. Deze patiënte, we zullen haar An noemen, was na een acute crisissituatie opgenomen in een psychiatrisch ziekenhuis. In de kamer van haar vorige psychotherapeut was ze in een ernstig dissociatieve toestand geraakt, waarbij ze uiteindelijk volkomen ‘katatoon en bewusteloos’ door de ziekenwagen weggevoerd moest worden en enkele dagen op de intensive care verbleef in een onverklaarbaar coma.
