Control aspects of active magnetic bearings

Abstract The challenges of active magnetic bearing control are reviewed and several new areas of research are discussed. Robust multivariable control design techniques are examined for the design of controllers for a high speed milling spindle. Adaptive vibration control is shown to be very effective in the suppression of synchronous vibration due to imbalance. Finally, software compensation of actuator nonlinearities is demonstrated to be highly effective in obtaining a linear plant for control system design.
