Biaxial BaGa4S7 and BaGa4Se7 crystals transparent in the mid-IR have been grown by the Bridgman–Stockbarger technique in sufficiently large sizes and with good optical quality to measure the refractive indices and analyze phase-matching properties. The orthorhombic biaxial crystal BaGa(4)S(7) has been employed in a 1064 nm pumped optical parametric oscillator generating <6 ns long idler pulses with energies as high as 0.5 mJ at 6.217 μm and average power of ~50 mW at 100 Hz. Notwithstanding the relatively low nonlinearity, ~3 times above threshold operation has been achieved at pump intensities more than 5 times below the crystal surface damage limit.

We realized a compact mid-IR room temperature operating Dy(3+):PbGa(2)S(4) laser, excited by a diode-pumped Nd:YAG laser at a wavelength of 1318 nm. The pumping laser was operating in pulsed mode with a pulse length of 4 ms and repetition rate of 20 Hz. Maximum pumping energy at a wavelength of 1318 nm was 15 mJ. Energy up to 90 μJ and mean output power of 1.8 mW was obtained at a wavelength of 4290 nm with a slope efficiency with respect to absorbed pumping energy better than 3%.

We performed a complete study of angle noncritical phase-matched second-harmonic generation in BaGa4Se7 in the mid-infrared region. We measured the dielectric frame orientation and showed that it does not rotate as a function of wavelength. We determined the phase-matching wavelengths and the associated spectral and angular acceptances along the x and y axes of the dielectric frame. We also estimated the magnitude of the nonlinear coefficients involved.

We employ AgGaSe(2) for difference-frequency generation between signal and idler of synchronously-pumped picosecond / femtosecond OPOs at 80 / 53 MHz. Continuous tuning in the picosecond regime is achieved from 5 to 18 µm with average power of 140 mW at 6 µm. In the femtosecond regime the tunability extends from 5 to 17 µm with average power of 69 mW at 6 µm. Maximum single pulse energies of >1 nJ in both cases represent the highest values at such high repetition rates.

We report measurements of the transparency, nonlinear coefficients and damage threshold of BaGa4S7 grown by the Bridgman-Stockbarger technique. We also present calculations showing that this crystal is phase-matchable for down conversion into the mid-IR starting from a pump wavelength of 1064 nm.

The room-temperature laser-oscillation properties of lead thiogallate crystals doped with dysprosium ions PbGa(2)S(4):Dy(3+) without additional codoping and codoped with potassium ion for excessive charge compensation were investigated. A slope efficiency of 1% was obtained for the codoped crystal. YAP:Er -1.66 microm laser resonant pumping of PbGa(2)S(4):Dy(3+) laser was compared with YAG:Nd -1.32 microm nonresonant pumping. The maximum energy obtained was 57 microJ with the negligible influence of the atmosphere.

In this Letter, we demonstrate the pulsed and CW operation of the Dy:PbGa(2)S(4) laser directly pumped by the 1.7 μm laser diode. In the pulsed regime (pulse duration 5 ms; repetition rate 20 Hz), the maximum mean output power of 9.5 mW was obtained with the slope efficiency of 9.3% with respect to the absorbed pump power. The generated wavelength was 4.32 μm, and the laser beam cross section was approximately Gaussian on both axes. Stable CW laser generation was also successfully obtained with the maximum output power of 67 mW and the slope efficiency of 8%. Depopulation of the lower laser level by 1.7 μm pump radiation absorption followed by 1.3 μm upconversion fluorescence was demonstrated. These results show the possibility of construction of the compact diode-pumped solid-state pulsed or CW laser generating at 4.3 μm in the power level of tens mW operating at room temperature.

Phase-matching directions and refined Sellmeier equations of the monoclinic acentric crystal BaGa 4 Se 7

Elodie Boursier; Patricia Segonds; Bertrand Ménaert; Valeriy Badikov; Vladimir Panyutin; Dmitrii Badikov; Valentin Petrov; Benoit Boulanger

We directly measured the phase-matching directions of second-harmonic and difference frequency generation in the principal planes of the biaxial BaGa4Se7 (BGSe) crystal using the sphere method. The simultaneous fit of the data allowed us to refine the Sellmeier equations of the three principal refractive indices of BGSe, and to calculate the tuning curves for infrared optical parametric generation.
