Improved interferometric method for determination of refractive index profile parameters in single-mode waveguides

The simple nondestructive method suitable for the examination of single-mode graded-index waveguides is presented. Deposition of liquid immersion onto the waveguide surface and interferometric registration of induced mode index variations are used in this technique. The interferometer scheme is formed automatically in the usual procedure of waveguide mode launching. The use of additional side interference patterns allows avoiding spurious fringe sets in measurements.

Selective mode launching in a multimode channel waveguide by planar coupler

Selective mode couplers representing a planar variant of input/output prism couplers have been fabricated. The planar couplers developed demonstrate selective excitation of solitary modes of different orders in channel waveguides. Mode division/multiplexing units based on these couplers can provide practical applications of modal data compression in multimode fibre links, resulting in multiplication of the transmission capacity.

New technique of selective mode launching in multimode fiber links

Integrated optical unit operating as a selective mode launcher/detector matched with a multimode fiber is described. The unit is capable to perform an independent launch of fiber modes of different orders, and each excited mode represents an independent informational channel. Hence total informational capacity of fiber system can be increased by several times. The key element of the launcher/detector is full planar selective mode coupler. The fabricated experimental samples of the developed selective coupler demonstrate a serviceability of the device.

Glass waveguide structures for integrated optical gyro: design, fabrication, and testing

In the process of practical creation the complicate integrated optical devices which include many different components (straight and curve waveguides, couplers, ring resonators etc.) it is difficult to provide preliminary theoretical calculation of real topology including lengths, gaps, radiuses of curvature and so on. This paper presents a practical step-by-step process of design the glass integrated optical unit for IO guroscope in which the next step is based on results of previous. Some experimental results are given in last part although the general success was not be obtained.

Developed passive components of planar optical schemes

New simple production methods for integrated optical passive elements and the results of the investigation of their operating performance are presented. Coniform geodesic lenses obtained by pressing at heating exhibit properties of waveguide negative lenses and waveguide beamsplitters. The modified production techniques of planar input/output couplers based on tapered waveguides and elements with a 2-D refractive index gradient enable narrowing the angle width of the device beam directivity diagram three to five times to values of 15 to 30 arcmin. A new waveguide diaphragm unified for the modes of different numbers and polarizations is presented.
