Innovative research concerning eHealth products and services in Romania

Doina Banciu; Adriana Alexandru

The eHealth aims to increase the quality of healthcare activities as well as the improvement of social health. The Internet has a great potential in this field, providing wide access to information and on-line services. Millions of citizen all over the world use Internet as a source of healthcare information aimed to improve their lives. The paper presents an evaluation of eHealth development in Romania. The scores of Romanian GPs practices are compared with the same results of EU27 countries. Some examples of on-going or already implemented eHealth systems are provided, as well as on-line services available for Romanian citizen.

Towards a GRID-Based Digital Library Management System

Gheorghe Sebestyén-Pál; Doina Banciu; Tünde Bálint; Bogdan Moscaiuc; Ágnes Sebestyén-Pál

This paper describes an ontology-based approach for the design of a digital library management system dedicated for scientific and technical purposes ant it analyses the issues concerning the implementation of a digital content management system on a GRID infrastructure. The authors propose an implementation model that benefits from the services offered by a GRID middleware. As part of the solution two in-depth search techniques are presented.

Digital Content Management on GRID Structures

Gheorghe Sebestyen; Doina Banciu; Tünde Bálint; Anca Hangan

This paper analyses the issues concerning the implementation of a digital content management system on a GRID infrastructure. The authors propose an implementation model that benefits from the services offered by a GRID middleware. Experiments made in two cases of digital content management (multimedia streaming and digital library) demonstrated the advantages and drawbacks of the proposed model.

Optical Character Recognition on a Grid Infrastructure

Dana Petcu; Silviu Panica; Doina Banciu; Viorel Negru; Andrei Eckstein

The current capacity to translate paper documents quickly and accurately into machine readable form using optical character recognition technology augments the opportunities in document searching and storing, as well as the automated document processing. A fast response in translating large collections of image-based electronic documents into structured electronic documents is still a problem. The availability of a large number of processing units in Grid environments and of free optical character recognition tools can be exploited to produce a fast translation. Following this idea, several experiments concerning optical character recognition were performed on a Grid infrastructure and their results are reported in this paper. These results are encouraging further developments of systems for document image analysis using Grid technologies.

Using Social Networking Software to Promote Digital Libraries

Doina Banciu; Antoniu Gabriel Pitic; Daniel Volovici; Adi Cristina Mitea

The impact of the social networks nowadays is impossible to ignore. Sales companies turn towards them as they acknowledge the opportunities provided by the socio-emotional value of the information that spreads quickly within the communities of these networks. Facebook, at more than 600 million users, is the largest of these, to date. We made a study on this very network, in order to observe the way an application can spread among its users for a week, without using any paid publicity. The use of Facebook’s framework for the promotion of digital libraries can constitute an opportunity and a challenge at the same time. In this paper, we propose an architecture to enable the promotion of digital libraries within the social network environment. The results prove that such an approach can have a significant impact in the online community.
