Spin quantum tunneling via entangled states in a dimer of exchange-coupled single-molecule magnets

A new family of supramolecular, antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled dimers of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has recently been reported. Each SMM acts as a bias on its neighbor, shifting the quantum tunneling resonances of the individual SMMs. Hysteresis loop measurements on a single crystal of SMM dimers have now established quantum tunneling of the magnetization via entangled states of the dimer. This shows that the dimer really does behave as a quantum mechanically coupled dimer, and also allows the measurement of the longitudinal and transverse superexchange coupling constants.

Spin Maximization: Switching of the Usual S = 11 State of MnII4MnIII3 Disklike Complexes to the Maximum S = 16

The S = 11 ground states of the Mn 7 family of mixed-valence complexes with a metal-centered hexagonal topology have been found by density functional theory calculations to arise by spin frustration involving small differences in the magnitudes of the two weakest interactions controlling the alignment of the central spin. Targeted structural perturbation has allowed a complex with the central spin flipped to be discovered, which thus possesses the maximum S = 16 ground state.

High-nuclearity homometallic iron and nickel clusters: Fe22 and Ni24 complexes from the use of N-methyldiethanolamine

The use of N-methyldiethanolamine (mdaH2) in reactions with Fe(III) and Ni(II) sources has led to Fe22 and Ni24 products; the clusters are the highest and second-highest, respectively, homometallic clusters for these metals to date, and possess S = 0 and S = 6 ground states, respectively.

Pressure dependence of the exchange interaction in the dimeric single-molecule magnet [Mn4O3Cl4(O2CEt)3(py)3]2 from inelastic neutron scattering

The low-lying magnetic excitations in the dimers of single-molecule magnets [Mn{sub 4}O{sub 3}Cl{sub 4}(O{sub 2}CEt){sub 3}(py){sub 3}]{sub 2}, or (Mn{sub 4}){sub 2}, are studied by inelastic neutron scattering as a function of hydrostatic pressure. The anisotropy parameters D and B{sub 0}{sup 4}, which describe each Mn{sub 4} subunit, are essentially pressure independent, while the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling J between the two Mn{sub 4} subunits strongly depends on pressure, with an increase of 42% at 17 kbar. Additional pressure-dependent powder x-ray measurements allow a structural interpretation of the findings.
