Abstract Increasingly countries are looking at ways to improve the performance of their cadastral systems and are examining ‘benchmarking’ as one option. As with all comparative analyses, including benchmarking, obtaining useable data is critical. This paper presents the results of a project to compare the performance of cadastral systems internationally, undertaken over the last two years by Commission 7, International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) (which is responsible for cadastre and land management matters within the FIG). The paper is primarily concerned with presenting data based on appropriate performance indicators and does not attempt to draw conclusions from the data. The Commission believes the results of this project will be useful to other countries wishing to improve their own cadastral systems. In addition the project has identified the very real difficulties in developing appropriate performance indicators for cadastral systems because of differences in the interpretation of cadastral def...

The changing humankind-land relationship and current global and local drivers such as sustainable development, urbanization, globalization, economic reform and the information revolution, demand land administration responses. Of the global drivers, sustainable development may be identified as having overall significance because of its dynamic economic-political, social, and environmental dimensions. At the heart of the challenging opportunity-cost decisions for sustainable development is the pressing need for land administration systems to evolve speedily and appropriately to support the sustainable development imperative.

Abstract The background of the South Austratian cadastral system is traced emphasising the original partitioning into Counties, Hundreds and Sections. The development of the Torrens system of land registration is briefly reviewed together with the growth of cadastral surveying to support that system. The problems and deficiencies of the existing surveying methodology are emphasised. This is the first of two articles examining reform in the South Australian cadastral survey system.

Abstract A concept of core spatial data assets is described including a summary of the current status of those datasets in New South Wales. A field trial to test an integrated technology solution–THE ANGLEDOOL PROJECT–is outlined and the resulting technical specifications are detailed. As a result of the project, substantial savings in ground survey were identified, the effectiveness of high-technology mapping techniques was demonstrated, as was the capacity for public and private sectors to work collaboratively. The information that now comprises ANGLEDOOL data is an excellent benchmark for evaluating various other techniques and scenarios including the use of softcopy photogrammetry.
