With a Little Help from Their Saints

A LMOST EXACTLY a third of a century has passed since I gave my first lecture as a newly hatched Ph.D. who turned in his completed dissertation a fortnight before his first job started. Curiously, I delivered that lecture not more than five hundred yards from here. I have now come full circle: San Diego State University, University of Southern California, University of New Mexico, St. Marys University in San Antonio, and now back to the Harbor of the Sun.
