Application of a Three-Dimensional storm surge Model

Abstract An integral part of the feasibility assessment of a proposed offshore jetport site near Cleveland Harbor was an investigation of effects of the structure on Lake Erie hydrodynamics. As a part of this analysis, the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) conducted a model feasibility investigation. To study effects of the jetport structure on lake hydrodynamics during storms, a three-dimensional numerical storm surge model was applied to Lake Erie. The model was applied with and without the jetport structure providing an estimate of the changes in lake hydrodynamics which would be expected if the jetport were constructed.

The threat of man-made and natural disturbances to the coastal environment is a continuing and perplexing problem. With the advent of rapid, numerical simulation models describing coastal water behavior, the ability to better understand these regions and to provide data to offset the adverse impacts caused by these disturbances, has greatly improved.
