Mathematical people : profiles and interviews

Donald J. Albers; Gerald L. Alexanderson

This unique collection contains extensive and in-depth interviews with mathematicians who have shaped the field of mathematics in the twentieth century. Collected by two mathematicians respected in the community for their skill in communicating mathematical topics to a broader audience, the book is also rich with photographs and includes an introduction by Philip J. Davis.

A Conversation with Henry Pollak

Donald J. Albers; Michael J. Thibodeaux

Henry O. Pollak is Director of the Mathematics and Statistics Research Center of Bell Laboratories. He is responsible for research on the mathematics of physics and networks, communication theory, discrete systems, statistics and data analysis. As Director, he administers a remarkable group of highly skilled mathematicians who not only create beautiful mathematics but who are remarkably adept at drawing inspiration from and linking mathematics to real-world applications. Pollak is a strong advocate of incorporating applications into the mathematics curriculum at all levels of education. For more than a quarter century, he has worked very hard to improve mathematics instruction. Despite his heavy adminis? trative responsibilities at Bell Laboratories, he has found time to serve professional mathematics associations in this country and overseas. Most recently, he was Chairman of the Fourth International Congress on Mathematical Education and President of the Mathematical Association of America.

A Conversation with Robin Wilson

Donald J. Albers; G. L. Alexanderson; Robin Wilson

Robin Wilson is a graph theorist at the Open University in England. Although he has longstanding ties with the United States?a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania and annual visits to Colorado College, among others?he spends most of his year with his family in Oxford, writing and teaching for the OU. Of his thirteen books in graph theory and combinatorics, his first, Introduction to Graph Theory, has appeared in three editions and in translations into Spanish, Russian, German, Italian, Polish, and Japanese. But his interests go far beyond graph theory and combinatorics: he has written and co-edited four books on Gilbert and Sullivan
