The effects of ultraviolet irradiation on a baculovirus infecting Galleria mellonella

Donald J. Witt; Gordon R. Stairs

Abstract The nuclear-polyhedrosis virus ( Baculovirus ) of Galleria mellonella was inactivated by exposure to far ultraviolet radiation (2537 A) and to near ultraviolet radiation (3000–3800 A). Based on the dosage required for inactivation and the pattern of response, the mode of action of each type of radiation appears distinctive. The shape of the virus inactivation curve was found to depend on virus concentration, whereas the mode of action for each type of radiation was found to be constant.

Aspects of the cross transmission to Galleria mellonella of a Baculovirus from the alfalfa looper, Autographa californica

Donald J. Witt; Christine A. Janus

Abstract The nuclear polyhedrosis virus originally isolated from the alfalfa looper, Autographa californica, was successfully transmitted to the greater wax moth, Galleria mellonella. Both the many polyhedra per nucleus (MP) and the few polyhedra per nucleus (FP) plaque variants of this virus were found to be infective when injected intracoelomically. When polyhedra of each plaque variant were fed to G. mellonella larvae, a difference in response was observed; the MP plaque variant was estimated to be 30 times more infective than the FP variant.

Substructure analysis with scanning electron microscopy of Estigmene acraea granulosis virus

Donald J. Witt; Sheila E. Milligan; Gordon R. Stairs

Abstract Substructure of the granulosis virus ( Baculovirus ) of the salt marsh caterpillar, Estigmene acraea (Drury), was analyzed with scanning electron microscopic techniques. Ovoid-shaped capsules of various sizes and morphologies were observed. High magnification revealed the presence of a mid-lateral depression surrounding a protuberance.
