Although he overstates the case, Mark Puls is surely right to trumpet the central role that Adams played in achieving American independence. And, as noted, Puls presents valuable descriptions and analysis of some significant aspects of Adams’s life. Adams’s emphasis on principle over personal material benefit and his brilliance as a politician should, as Puls does, be highlighted. Still, considered as a whole, the weaknesses in Samuel Adams: Father of the American Revolution outweigh its strengths.
