Properties of nanocellulose isolated from corncob residue using sulfuric acid, formic acid, oxidative and mechanical methods

In this work, nanocellulose was extracted from bleached corncob residue (CCR), an underutilized lignocellulose waste from furfural industry, using four different methods (i.e. sulfuric acid hydrolysis, formic acid (FA) hydrolysis, 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation, and pulp refining, respectively). The self-assembled structure, morphology, dimension, crystallinity, chemical structure and thermal stability of prepared nanocellulose were investigated. FA hydrolysis produced longer cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) than the one obtained by sulfuric acid hydrolysis, and resulted in high crystallinity and thermal stability due to its preferential degradation of amorphous cellulose and lignin. The cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) with fine and individualized structure could be isolated by TEMPO-mediated oxidation. In comparison with other nanocellulose products, the intensive pulp refining led to the CNFs with the longest length and the thickest diameter. This comparative study can help to provide an insight into the utilization of CCR as a potential source for nanocellulose production.

Kinetically controlled synthesis of nickel tetrahedron nanocrystals for high performance catalytic hydrogenation

Guoxiang Chen; Yonghui Zhao; Dong Lv; Tiejun Zhao; Yan Zhu; Yuhan Sun

Ni nanocrystals with a tetrahedral shape were synthesized through a solution-phase approach with sodium citrate serving as a capping surfactant. A ferromagnetic Ni tetrahedron exclusively bound by {111} facets achieved superior catalytic activity for toluene hydrogenation compared to Ni nanoflowers and Ni nanoparticles.

Model-Based Golf Swing Reconstruction

Dong Lv; Zhipei Huang; Li Xin Sun; Neng Hai Yu; Jiankang Wu

To increase the efficiency of golf training, 3D swing reconstruction is broadly used among golf researchers. Traditional reconstruction methods apply motion capture system (MOCAP) to gain golfers motion data and drive bio-mechanical model directly. The cost of MOCAP system restricts the application area of golf research and the reconstruction quality of swing relies on the accuracy of the motion data. We introduced the dynamical analysis into swing reconstruction and proposed a Dynamic Bayesian Network (DBN) model with Kinect to capture the swing motion. Our model focused on modeling the bio-mechanical and dynamical relationships between key joints of golfer during swing. The positions of key joints were updated by the model and were used as motion data to reconstruct golf swing. Experimental results show that our results are comparable with the ones acquired by optical MOCAP system in accuracy and can reconstruct the golf swing with much lower cost.

The Application of Optical Communication in the Sub-Module Design of Modular Multilevel Converter

Dong Lv; Feng Wei Li; Xiao Jian He; Lei Huang

With the sub-module number and scale growing on, the whole control system of MMC (Modular Multilevel Converter) tends to be much more complicated because of the cascade structure, which also intensifies the pressure of the converter main controller. To distribute the converter main controller’s task, the design of sub-module tenders itself extremely important. However, there is no explicit and comprehensive study on how to design the sub-module. This study, according to the characters of MMC, introduces a feasible architecture of hardware and software for the sub-module with optical communication. Each sub-module has its own independent controller and control system. That is to say, every sub-module is a complete system, which can do calculation and communication with outside. Sub-modules connect with the main controller of converter through communication using optical fibers. By adopting the optical communication, sub-modules not only can receive the control references data from the main controller, but also can send its own condition information back, which creates an interactive communication between the two sides. Additionally, through detailed experiments, the validity and feasibility of the design are demonstrated under two different control strategies.

The Research and Analysis on the Bean Transformer Oil

Dong Lv; Jin Xiang Sun; Jin Li

Characters of many types of transformer oils were researched in this paper. Vegetable oil made from bean was considered suitable transformer oil by comparing their physical and chemical characters, which are include fire safety, insulation, parameter related thermal activity, stability, and other issues such as environment-friendly character, etc. It can point out that the vegetable oil with appropriate addition agent will be a kind of popular transformer oil in the future.
