Workplace innovation, employment relations and HRM: two electronics companies in South Korea

Dong-One Kim; Johngseok Bae

Analysing two electronics companies (unionized LG Electronics and non-union Samsung SDI) in Korea, the present paper investigates the impact of union status on workplace innovations and the effects of workplace innovations on organizational performance. Both case firms are considered highly innovative, model companies in terms of their sophisticated human resource management (HRM) and cooperative employment relations (ER). We first provide a conceptual framework and generate three propositions. The framework is composed of three main components: input, organizational system and output. The major findings include: (1) the adoption of high performance work organizations (HPWO) is highly dependent upon top management and union/employee representatives; (2) the two case firms adopted two different production modes (a team production mode in LG Electronics and a lean production mode in Samsung SDI); and (3) alignment among organizational design and work processes, ER systems and HRM systems would lead to high organizational performance. We also discuss the transferability of HPWO to other cultural settings in a universalism-contingency context.

A comparison of the effectiveness of unions and non-union works councils in Korea: can non-union employee representation substitute for trade unionism?

Dong-One Kim; Hyun-Ki Kim

Using survey data from 857 employees of three unionized and three non-union establishments in Korea, this study compares the effectiveness of unions and non-union employee representation (NER). Union members appear to expect more from and to be more satisfied with unions than is the case for non-union employees regarding the activities of non-union works councils. This tendency is stronger in regard to distributive and employee advocacy issues than to mutual interest issues. Union members express stronger commitment to their unions than do non-union employees to their works councils. However, union members and works council members are not significantly different in terms of organizational commitment, job satisfaction and perceived industrial relations climate. Overall, the findings indicate that the structural weaknesses of NER are more evident than its positive attitudinal effects.

Effect of oxygen annealing on Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 thin film for colossal electroresistance at room temperature

Dong-One Kim; Choon-Woo Lee; Yunje Kim; Yun Tai Kim

We studied an appropriate annealing condition of Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (PCMO) thin film that can show good resistive switching characteristics for resistance random access memory applications and also tried to elucidate the mechanism of the resistive switching of PCMO thin film at room temperature. We could observe that crystal structure of PCMO film was changed by oxygen annealing. From x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, we can conclude that the excess of oxygen by oxygen annealing of PCMO film leads to an increase of Mn4+ content at the PCMO surface with a subsequent change in the Mn4+∕Mn3+ ratio at the PCMO surface. The resistance ratio of high resistance state and low resistance state was increased by oxygen annealing of PCMO thin film. This can be explained as follows. The change of the Mn4+∕Mn3+ ratio at the PCMO surface by oxygen annealing leads to the change of characteristics of Au-PCMO interface domain and therefore results in the change of the resistance ratio.

Globalization and labour rights: the case of Korea

Dong-One Kim; Johngseok Bae; Changwon Lee

In this contribution the background of Korean industrial relations (IR) is reviewed, followed by analysis of more recent changes with a special focus on globalization issues. We argue that globalization has both positive and negative effects on IR issues in Korea. There was a positive side of globalization in terms of worker rights, hence basic labour rights have been improved to meet global labour standards. However, there was a negative side to it as well in terms of working conditions and employment practices, which brought substantial setbacks for unions and rapidly eroded their power base. This negative side has more clearly appeared after the recent economic crisis.

The impact of corporate governance on employment relations in South Korea: the shareholder versus stakeholder perspectives

Dong Ju Kim; Dong-One Kim

This study empirically examined the impact of corporate governance on employment relations outcomes utilizing a comprehensive data set drawn from 214 Korean firms. The study contrasted the stakeholder and shareholder perspectives of corporate governance in investigating the impact of corporate governance on employment relations outcomes. The results showed that the stakeholder corporate governance orientation (as compared to the shareholder orientation) had positive relationships with education/training expense, the level of average employee tenure and industrial relations climate, and had a negative association with number of strikes. Overall, the results implied that the stakeholder orientation of firms led to more beneficial effects for employees and more consensual relations with labor unions than the shareholder orientation did.

Evaluating Industrial Relations Systems of OECD Countries from 1993 to 2005: A Two-Dimensional Approach

Dong-One Kim; Yoon-Ho Kim; Paula B. Voos; Hiromasa Suzuki; Young Doo Kim

This article uses both cross-sectional and longitudinal methods to evaluate the national industrial relations systems of 30 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries from 1993 to 2005. We adopt a pluralistic view of industrial relations that gives equal weight to efficiency and equity, along with a general systems model consisting of input, process and output. We rank each country in terms of a combined score of efficiency and equity. We find that the 30 OECD countries can be separated into three distinct groups (high on both equity and efficiency; high on efficiency but low on equity; moderate on equity and low on efficiency), and that these groups exhibit considerable stability over time.
