Saveme: client-side aggregation of cloud storage

Gyuwon Song; Suhyun Kim; Dongmahn Seo

Nowadays, there are many cloud storage service providers and many of them provide significant amounts of free storage. It is desirable for users to be able to manage the storage space available to them as a single unified space. Otherwise, user files will be scattered over many different providers, negating the advantage of using cloud storage. Another important concern of users is that their data is at the disposal of the service providers. Lastly, in contrast to the hype of extremely high availability, accidents tend to happen and even the most available cloud services are not accessible many times per year or even per month. SaveMe is designed to solve all of these issues, providing aggregation, security, and higher availability purely from the client side. It is the first approach to address all three issues without any additional server component. To achieve these goals, SaveMe is building a single virtual volume by combining public and private cloud storage. In SaveMe, every file is fully encrypted, erasure coded, and distributed. For better security and privacy, all data processes are performed on the client side, unlike the case of conventional cloud storage services. The logical volume of SaveMe is extensible due to a flexible data and volume model. The authors also tested the performance of SaveMe in comparison with those of existing services. SaveMe showed above average performance in terms of the speeds of uploading or downloading files. Furthermore, data availability evaluation clearly demonstrates that the availability of SaveMe is an order of magnitude higher than those of other commercial cloud storage services.

Smart parking system for Internet of Things

Chungsan Lee; Youngtak Han; Soobin Jeon; Dongmahn Seo; Inbum Jung

In this paper, we propose a smart parking system detecting and finding the parked location of a consumers vehicle. Using ultrasonic and magnetic sensor, the proposed system detects vehicles in indoor and outdoor parking fields, accurately. Wireless sensor motes support a vehicle location service in parking lots using BLE.

Mutual exclusion method in client-side aggregation of cloud storage

Dongmahn Seo; Suhyun Kim; Gyuwon Song

Consumers continue to produce and spend a huge amount of data using consumer electronic devices. To store consumers’ data, a huge volume of storage is needed. A cloud-of-clouds which is a virtual cloud storage service using heterogeneous public cloud storage services can be a solution. To support concurrent accesses for multiple consumers and devices, a mutual exclusion in a cloud-of-clouds is necessary. In this paper, we propose a mutual exclusion method for concurrent accesses in a cloud-of-clouds. The proposed method includes an atomic operation for cloud-of-clouds, a deadlock recovery and a race condition control.

Design and Implementation of MapReduce-Based Book Recommendation System by Analysis of Large-Scale Book-Rental Data

Joon-Min Gil; JongBum Lim; Dongmahn Seo

We design and implement a book recommendation system that can extract and suggest the books preferred by users through keyword-matching based on the information of frequently checked out books. The MapReduce programming model on the Hadoop platform is used to extract frequently rented books by using keyword-mapping with a target book. The MapReduce operations designed and implemented in this paper are performed to analyze the actual book-rental log data accumulated in university library, which has the characteristics of big data. An illustrative example shows that our book recommendation system can provide users with the information of the recommended books by keyword-mapping in the next book rent.

SaveMe: User-centric cloud system

Gyuwon Song; Suhyun Kim; Dongmahn Seo

We present SaveMe: user-centric cloud system as a cloud of clouds. We aim to provide an impregnable cloud service for end users. SaveMe builds a single virtual cloud by combining public and private clouds. In SaveMe, all files are fully encrypted, erasure coded, and distributed. All data processing is performed in a consumer electronic device. While maintaining advantages of a cloud service, it ensures better privacy and availability.

The smart shoes providing the gait information on IoT

Soobin Jeon; Chungsan Lee; Youngtak Han; Dongmahn Seo; Inbum Jung

This paper proposes the smart shoes system classifying a normal, out-toeing, and in-toeing gait to provide the gait information to customer. It measures and analyzes the gait posture using the distribution of pressure sensors on the insole. It sends the gait information to the smartphone application using a BLE communication. The experiment was performed to test the accuracy of proposed system. Finally, this paper showed that proposed system can measure the accurate gait posture.

The smart umbrella not only blocks a rain but also provides a variety of services to customers. Existing smart umbrellas have various features such as giving an alarm for raining and a loss prevention. In this paper, we propose new smart umbrella that guides the way to the destination on rainy days, collaborating with smartphone based on the IoT environment. It prevents to safety accident which occurs due to operating the smartphone for navigating. Also, it provides a convenience to customer according to self-navigating.

Smart Crossing system using IoT

KwangEun An; Young Ju Jeong; SungWon Lee; Dongmahn Seo

Crosswalk is a way of sharing the road between vehicle and people. However, density of the population rises, meanwhile the number of total accidents decreasing, the number of pedestrian accident does not drop down for 10 years. In this paper, we propose a new system called Smart Crossing that is another type of crosswalk using sensors, CCTV, illuminator and an IoT device to keep pedestrian in safe while crossing.
