Optimization of Luffing-Tower Crane Location in Tall Building Construction

The luffing-tower crane (T/C) is a key facility used in the vertical and horizontal transportation of materials in a tall building construction. Locating the crane in an optimal position is an essential task in the initial stages of construction planning. This paper proposes a new optimization model to locate the luffing T/C in the optimal position to minimize the transportation time. A newly developed mathematical formula is suggested to calculate the transportation time of luffing T/C correctly. An optimization algorithm, the Harmony Search (HS) algorithm, was used and the results show that HS has high performance characteristics to solve the optimization problem in a short period of time. In a case study, the proposed model offered a better position for T/C than the previous heuristic approach.

Inhibiting Factors and Improvement Plan of Table Formwork Method in High-Rise Building Construction

The table formwork method for high-rise building formwork can shorten the construction time and reduce manpower through machineand equipmentbased automation. However, this method is not used as much as other system formworks. Various studies have been conducted to activate the table formwork method; but, the problems in associated with the automation work of table formwork are not understood, because researchers are focusing on improving efficiency through new technology development. As a basic study of the activation of the table formwork method, this study proposes an improvement plan after analysing the problems and satisfaction level according to the detailed process of the table formwork method. The results of this study are expected to expedite the process improvement and activation of the table formwork method.

A Preliminary Study for Dynamic Construction Site Layout Planning Using Harmony Search Algorithm

Construction site layout planning is a dynamic multi-objective optimization problem since there are various temporary facilities (TFs) employed in the different construction phase. This paper proposes the use of harmony search algorithm (HSA) to solve the problem that assigning TFs to inside of the building. The suggested algorithm shows a rapid convergence to an optimal solution in a short time. In addition, comparative analysis with Genetic Algorithm (GA) is conducted to prove the efficiency of the proposed algorithm quantitatively.
