Seasonal changes of functional groups in coleopteran communities in pine forests

Fauna assemblages reflect their habitat relating to ecological function in an ecosystem. The functional groups are concerned with how a resource is processed by different species to provide a specific ecosystem service or function. We elucidated seasonal changes of coleopteran functional groups in forests, and evaluated their ecological roles related to available food resources. Coleopteran communities were collected weekly or biweekly using Malaise traps at nine study sites in Japanese red pine forests in Korea from late June to September 2005. Compositions of the functional groups were compared at the different sites and at sampling times with respect to taxa richness and abundance. Cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional scaling were used to characterize spatial and temporal changes of functional groups. Herbivores and dead/live wood feeders regulating primary production in the pine forests were the dominant coleopteran groups in July, followed by detritivores and predators that dominated from July to August, resulting from the accumulation of detritus. Then, fungivores became dominant due to increased fungal biomass in the forest. Seasonal changes of coleopteran functional groups shifted from regulators of primary production to regulators of decomposition, reflecting their available food resources. In addition, abundance of detritivores and predators were dependent on total abundance of coleopterans, suggesting that these two groups reflect their habitat condition.

A Taxonomie Note on Sclerodermas harmandi, Ectoparasite of Stem and Wood Boring Insect Larvae (Hymenoptera: Chrysidoidea'-Bethylidae) in South Korea

Abstract As a result of natural enemy survey against the Japanese pine sawyer (Monochamus alternates (Hope 1842)), the major vector of pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner & Buhrer 1934)), many samples of the ectoparasitic wasp, Sclerodermas harmandi (Buysson 1903) were collected nationwide in Korea from June to October in 2005. It is redescribed with the figures and biometrie data of apterous and alate females.

A new species of Clytus Laicharting (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) from Korea with a key to Korean species

A new species of Clytus Laicharting (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is described from Korea. Illustrations of diagnostic characteristics of the new species including male genitalia are provided with a key to Korean Clytus species.

Taxonomic Study on the Poneromorph Subfamilies Group (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Korea

A total of 12 species in six genera of the poneromorph subfamilies group in Korea was reviewed. All investigated specimens are classified into three subfamilies; Amblyoponinae, Proceratinae and Ponerinae. Totally six genera were known and Cryptopone, Hypoponera, Pachycondyla and Ponera belong to the subfamily Ponerinae and Amblyopone and Proceratium belongs to the subfamily Amblyoponinae and Proceratinae respectively. In this study, keys to the all known genera and species of the subfamilies in Korea are presented. A synonymic list, description of a worker and comments on each species are given with SEM photographs of worker.

Taxonomic Review of the Genus Xylotrechus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Cerambycinae) in Korea with a Newly Recorded Species

A total of sixteen Xylotrechus species from the Korean peninsula are recognized, including a newly recorded species, Xylotrechus pavlovskii Plavilstshikov, 1954. We present brief descriptions of the Korean Xylotrechus species, except four species which could not be examined in this study. The geographic distribution, host plants, illustrations for each species, and a key to the Korean Xylotrechus species are provided.

Checklist of the Family Platypodidae (Coleoptera) in Korea

Abstract As a result of the survey of pinhole borers in Korea, one species, Treptoplatypus severini Blandford, was identified as a new addition to the Korean fauna. We observed 3 species, Platypus koryoensis, P. lewisi, and Treptoplatypus severini and could not examined Korean specimens of 3 previously recorded species, Crossotarsus simplex, Dinoplatypus calamus, Treptoplatypus solidus. We compared the external characteristics of male specimens of several species for the easy identification of the Korean Platypodidae, and updated the taxonomic position of the Korean species.

Review of the Genus Myrmica in Korea (Hymenptera: Formicidae)

Abstract The paper contains a taxonomie review of 12 species of the genus Myrmica occurring in Korea. The following species are under discussion: M. angulinodis Ruzsky, M. carinata Kupyanskaya, M. hyungokae Elmes, M. jessensis Forel, M. kasczenkoi Ruzsky, M. kotokui Forel, M. koreana Elmes, M kurokii Forel, M. lobicornis Nylander, M. ruginodis Nylander, M silvestrii Wheeler, M. sulcinodis Nylander. Twelve species of the genus Myrmica are recognized from Korea, these are revised and a key to their identification is provided. Five species, M. cadusa, M. incurvata, M. saphoshikovi, M. scabrinodis, and M. yoshiokai are questionable to be distributed in Korea, as I have not found any specimens preserved in Korea. The SEM photo and illustrations of the worker of each species are provided.

A New Species of Strumigenys(Hymenoptera: Formicidae) from Korea

Abstract Strumigenys choii sp. nov. is described and illustrated from the Is. Soheuksan-do, Korea. Although this species is similar to the congener S. lewisi, from which differs in having a glossy and smooth dorsal plate comprised of a pronotum and propodeum, and spatulate hairs on the head, antennal scapes, alitrunk, pedicel, legs and gaster.

Three Species of Histerid Beetles (Coleoptera: Histeridae) New to Korea

Until now, 53 species belonging to 22 genera of 6 subfamily of family Histeridae have been recorded in Korea. As a result of this study, we newly add two subfamily, three genera, and three species, Niponius osorioceps Lewis, 1885, Plegaderus (Plegaderus) marseuli Reitter, 1877, and Trypeticus fagi (Lewis, 1884), to Korea along with a brief description and illustration of the diagnostic characters.

Insect community structures along elevation gradients on Mt. Seongak-san, South Korea

Insect communities along three elevation gradients on Mt. Seongak-san, South Korea, were investigated from May to September 2013 using traps in order to collect basic data for distributional monitoring of species in a forest ecosystem. A total of 2698 individuals of 309 moth species of 18 families were collected in bucket-light traps, along with 196 individuals of 26 ground-beetle species and 11,276 individuals of 14 ant species in pit-fall traps. The insect community at each site was analyzed using analysis of variance and non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMS). The ground-beetle and ant abundances varied with elevation. The NMS showed distinct clusters of moths between the ground-beetle and ant distributions with elevation and month. The community-level responses of these insect groups to those gradients were analyzed.
