New reports of the presence and ecology of the Sumatran striped rabbit (Nesolagus netscheri) in South Sumatra

Abstract The Sumatran striped rabbit (Nesolagus netscheri Schlegel 1880), endemic to the Indonesian island of Sumatra, is one of the rarest and least known lagomorph in the World. On 2 February 2017, N. netscheri was sighted in the forested Gunung Raya Wildlife Reserve, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia. An immediate follow up survey of local coffee farmers and hunters provided new data on the occurrence and ecology of N. netscheri.

Crossocheilus obscurus Tan & Kottelat, 2009 (Teleostei, Cyprinidae): distribution extension and first record for Musi basin, South Sumatra, Indonesia

Crossocheilus obscurus is a little known cyprinid fish which was first described in 2009 in the Batang Hari basin (West Sumatra province, Indonesia), with no additional published information since that time. In April 2016, C. obscurus was observed and photographed in the Musi basin (South Sumatra province). The identification of this species confirms its presence in a new river basin, more than 250 km south from its type locality.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF INVENTORY, MONITORING AND INFORMATION NETWORKS SYSTEM OF FAUNAL DIVERSITY IN SOUTH SUMATRA

Despite high attention and commitment of Indonesia in biodiversity conservation and its habitat, however, loss of biodiversity and habitat deforestation is also still high. Deforestation rate in Indonesia between period of 2000-2012 reach up 6.02 million ha, and approximately onethird of which is in Sumatra Island. As the fulfillment of CBD and Aichi targets, and in line with the mandate of the Law on the Conservation of Natural Resources and Ecosystems and IBSAP (Indonesian Biodiversity Strategy & Action Plan 2015-2020), we try to support the requires data as well as information on the current state of biodiversity. The aims are to develop an inventory system of biodiversity needed to establish baseline data on biodiversity including its conservation status in South Sumatra, develop a biodiversity monitoring system with qualitative parameters that can be used in the determination and monitoring of degradation rates of biodiversity, and the establishment of data management system and information network of fauna biodiversity in South Sumatera so that it can be utilized in monitoring and reporting of biodiversity at regional, national and international level at the international level. We conduct a comprehensive review of methods and techniques of inventory and monitoring of fauna biodiversity, especially those that have been done in the area of South Sumatra Province. We also analysis of data needs and information network of fauna biodiversity in South Sumatra. The results is shows in the web-application database, called the South Sumatran Biodiversity Information Networks, or SSBIN, and could preview at http://ssbin.unsri.ac.id/ . A RAPID BIRD SURVEY TO CONSERVATION AREA OF INDUSTRIAL ACACIA TIMBER PLANTATION, SOUTH SUMATRA PROVINCE; WITH COMPARISON TO THREE DIFFERENT METHODS

A rapid bird survey was done in a small conservation area of industrial timber concession of PT BMH (Bumi Mekar Hijau), namely KPPN (Kawasan Pelestarian Plasma Nutfah), South Sumatra Province. The area has 448 ha, dominated by degraded secondary swamp forest surrounded by Acacia plantation. Three survey methods were applied to assess bird diversity in this area: transect line, mist-netting and audio-visual station recording. A total of 36 species was recorded during survey. Among three methods applied, transect line is the most effective method to detect more bird species (29 species), followed by audio-visual station recording (26 species) and mist-netting (three species). There are eight species which protected by Indonesian law and two birds are listed as Near Threatened (NT) by International Union for Conservation of Nature or IUCN. Although number of species birds recorded are not significance, but this area still support habitat for various birds diversity, and the forest remaining should be well-managed to support its conservation goals.

THE DIVERSITY OF AMPHIBIANS IN CAMPUS AREA OF SRIWIJAYA UNIVERSITY INDRALAYA, OGAN ILIR, SOUTH SUMATERA

The study is diversity of amphibians in campus area of sriwijaya university indralaya, ogan ilir, south sumatra was aimed to determine the diversity of amphibian species present in this area. The research has been done in March until May 2015, in the campus of the Sriwijaya University, Indralaya. The method in this study is use the transect method by placing seventh transect line on line with the direction of cutting contour lines. Data collection techniques using the Visual Encounter Survey (VES) and Pit-Fall Trap method in combination with the Straight Line Method and Fence (Drift Fence). Results from this study recorded 11 species of amphibians from five families of the Anura. Average diversity index at Sriwijaya University Indralaya region is 1.70 which fall into the medium category. Keywords : Sriwijaya university, amphibians, transect,diversity

INVENTORY OF HERPETOFAUNA IN REGIONAL GERMPLASM PRESERVATION IN PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY OGAN KOMERING ILIR REGENCY SOUTH SUMATRA

The research aims to determine of herpetofauna in Regional Germplasm Preservation, PT. Bumi Mekar Hijau, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, South Sumatra. The research was conducted in May until June 2015, conducted on 4 transect observation purposively determined by considering the type of habitat herpetofauna and the results of a preliminary survey. The method used in this research is the Visual Encounter Survey (VES). Observations carried out in the morning and evening. The total number of herpetofauna were found during the observation as many as 15 species of 9 families. The number of amphibians was found as many as 6 species of 3 families and reptiles as many as 9 species of 6 families. There are two species categorized as Vulnerable in IUCN 2015 and Appendix II CITES which are the Siebenrockiella crassicollis and Cuora amboinensis cuoro Keywords : Inventory, herpetofauna, regional germplasm preservation, industrial plantation forest

FIRST BREEDING RECORD OF JAVAN MUNIA (Lonchura leucogastroides) IN SUMATRA, INDONESIA

Javan Munia ( Lonchura leucogastroides ) is recently common bird species in southern Sumatra, but no breeding record reported in Sumatra. On 11 October 2015, an active nest of Javan Munia and few juveniles were seen among bunches of Banana ( Musa sp) fruits in Sukarejo village, Musi Rawas district, South Sumatra province.
