Area control of the green peach aphid on peach and the reduction of potato leaf roll virus.

Peach trees in a 500-mile2 (1295 sq. K) area were sprayed during April and May each year from 1966 to 1969 to control the wingless fundatrix form ofMyzus persicae (Sulzer) after the overwintering eggs had hatched and before subsequent generations of the aphids had developed wings and migrated to summer host plants. The results were monitored from 1966 to 1971 by using about 60 yellow water trap pans each year to collect winged aphids in the control area. Also, aphids were counted weekly in about 30 potato fields each year. Samples of potato tubers collected from the 30 fields (and from 34 other fields in 1965) were indexed for net necrosis and then planted and indexed for chronic leaf roll.The early spraying reduced the populations of winged aphids collected in traps in May and early June 1966–1969 by about 60% compared with the post-spray years (1970–1971). The amount of net necrosis found in potato tubers from the control area was reduced from 11 % in 1965 to slightly more than 3% from 1967 through 1969 and the chronic leaf roll in plants was reduced from 43% in 1965 to about 10% for the same years. Only after two years of spraying was there evidence of a significant reduction in the spread of the virus; similarly, not until 2 years (1970 and 1971) following the end of the spray program did the virus increase significantly.ResumenArboles de duraznero ubicados en un area de 1,295 Km2 fueron asperjados cada ano durante los meses de abril y mayo, desde 1966 a 1969, para controlar las fundatrices ápteras deMyzus persicae (Sulzer) después de la aclosión de los huevos de invierno y antes de que la siguiente generación del áfido hubiera desarrollado alas y migrara a sus plantas hospederas de verano. Los resultados fueron controlados de 1966 a 1971 mediante aproximadamente 60 bandejas amarillas con agua, cada año, para atrapar la forma alada del áfido en el área de control. Populations of aphids on named varieties of Irish potatoes

Populations of the green peach aphid,Myzus persicae (Sulzer), and the potato aphid,Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas), were observed on 27 named varieties of Irish potatoes in the Yakima Valley of Washington intermittently from 1947 through 1968. The Epicure, Great Scot, and B5141-6 varieties produced relatively fewer green peach aphids than other varieties tested; Bliss Triumph and Red Pontiac produced relatively fewer potato aphids. Except for Doebay Red, the red-skinned varieties, Bliss Triumph, Red McLure, Norland, and Earnly Rose, were extremely to moderately productive of the green peach aphid. No correlation was apparent between abundance of aphids and the specific gravity or yield of tubers.

Relationship between injury and damage to potatoes by wireworms

A relationship between injury (any penetration of a tuber) and damage (in accordance with the U.S. Standards for Grades of Potatoes) caused by the sugarbeet wireworm,Limonius californicus (Mannerheim), the Pacific Coast wireworm,L. canus LeConte, and the Great Basin wireworm,Ctenicera priunina (Horn), to potatoes was determined. Based on tuber weights, the percentage of damage (D) increased curvilinearly with increased percentage of injury (I). Percentages of injured and damaged tubers based on tuber weights were significantly different from those based on tuber count. Difference in the relationship of injury vs. damage between untreated and fonofos-treated tubers was not significant. The regression D = -0.012 + 0.1 111 + 0.003I2 can be used to estimate the amount of damage from the amount of injury without the necessity of cutting and measuring feeding holes.ResumenSe determinó en papa una relación entre las heridas (cualquier penetración en el tubérculo) y los danos (según están definidos en al “U.S. Standards for Grades of Potatoes) causados por el gusano alambre de la remolacha (Limonius californicus Mannerheim), por el gusano alambre de la costa del Pacífico (L. canus LeConte), y por el gusano alambre de la Gran Cuenca (Ctenicera pruinina Horn). Basándose en el peso de los tubérculos, se observó que el porcentaje de daños (D) se incrementó en función curvilínea con el aumento del porcentaje de heridas (H).
