This study focused on the relations between family configuration (living arrangements, heads of family, and financial contributions to the familys support), age, gender, and physical health (functional capacity, number of diseases and signs and symptoms, and social involvement) and psychological health (depression and anxiety) among the elderly, based on self-reported data. The probabilistic sample included 134 elderly without cognitive deficit, with data collected in home interviews. Cluster analyses were performed using the partitioning method (three groupings). The variables that contributed the most to forming groups were basic activities of daily living (R(2) = 0.732) and instrumental activities of daily living (R(2) = 0.487), number of diseases (R(2) = 0.241), and age (R(2) = 0.225). The predominant family configuration was living with children and/or grandchildren, with the elderly as providers and heads of the family. The study showed associations between family configuration and physical and psychological health status. Women showed a higher financial burden and worse psychological health than men.

Objective: The aim of the present study was to analyze the relationship between family configuration, the physical and psychological health conditions of the elderly and their satisfaction with family relationships. Methods: A study was undertaken of 134 older people from the city of Santo Antonio de Jesus, Bahia, without cognitive deficits suggestive of dementia. Cluster analysis was performed by the partition method (three groups). Results: The majority of the elderly persons were heads of household (72.4%), who contributed to the financial upkeep of their family (total: 49.2%; partially: 44%), lived in multigenerational arrangements (64.9%), had good physical functionality, did not suffer from depression (82.9%) or anxiety (76.9%) and judged their family to have good functionality (85.8%). The variables that most contributed to the formation of clusters were basic activities of daily living (R 2 =0.725) and family functionality (R 2 =0.757). Clusters were: 1) elderly persons who needed help to perform instrumental activities of daily living, who suffered from anxiety and were dissatisfied with family relationships; 2) elderly individuals who were dependent for the performance of activities of daily living, who suffered from anxiety and were satisfied with family relationships; 3) independent elderly persons who were satisfied with family relationships. Conclusions: There were reciprocal relationships between the satisfaction of the elderly individuals with their family relationships and their levels of physical functionality and mental health.

This study was aimed to investigate associations between the evaluations of family relationships performed by elderly people and their sociodemographic and health characteristics. 134 seniors were submitted to self-report measures of satisfaction with family relationships and family climate, sex, age and family configuration. Data were submitted to cluster analysis from which there were derived three variable groups whose differentiation was mostly determined by functional independence (R2 = 0.816) and satisfaction with family relationships (R2 = 0.642). There we observed statistically significant associations between functional independence, absence of depression and anxiety, satisfaction with family relationships, and positive evaluation towards family climate; depression and anxiety, dissatisfaction with family relationships, and negative evaluation of the family climate; functional dependence, depression and anxiety, satisfaction with family relationships and negative evaluation of the family climate, suggesting that functional dependence and emotional disturbances can be risk conditions towards family functionality.
