SummaryOne hundred and seventy-two pupils, aged 14 to 18 years, have been tuberculin tested in the past eleven years. Eighty-six have had chestx-ray films. Thirty-one have passed through the primary infection of tuberculosis in school; of these one died in a very short time, and the remaining thirty are very well today. A follow-up reveals that not one of the positive entrants has developed tuberculosis, nor have any of the thirty “conversion” cases; two of the negative leavers developed early phthisis four to five vears after leaving school.

The period covers four years.2.The over-all conversion rate was 97·25 per cent.3.The duration of immunity is discussed.4.Undesirable reactions numbered 16 (0·011 per cent.).5.Tuberculous disease developed in 10 immunised individuals (0·0071 per cent.) with 1 death. Eleven further cases occurred in persons who were incubating tuberculous disease about the time of vaccination (0·0078 per cent.) with 4 deaths.6.The vaccine, tuberculin tests, and technique employed are described.

SummaryBCG vaccination of 411 persons is reported. Nearly half of these were highly exposed to infection by the tubercle bacillus. The series includes 51 newborns, 50 highly exposed after vaccination. Two of the whole series have developed benign primary tuberculosis. A death stated to be due to tuberculosis is discussed. The remainder are well. There was one sore arm.
