Linux HTB queuing discipline implementations

Doru Balan; Dan Alin Potorac

In computer networks the traffic control is an essential management issue and a permanent challenge for network engineers. The paper is evaluating the main QoS (Quality of Service) technologies used in networks management. The article is mainly focusing on classful queuing disciplines and HTB (Hierarchy Token Bucket) Linux implementations. The shaping and prioritization mechanisms are explained, and are proposed three different practical solutions for implementing HTB, under a common Linux environment, for a defined QoS scenario.

Contribution for limiting and testing network policies

Marius C. Breaban; Adrian Graur; Alin D. Potorac; Doru Balan

Since the data transmission networks require different bandwidth for simultaneous transmission of data, the new generation of network equipment use technologies that ensure QoS (Quality of Service) control services integrated data, video, voice and multimedia. This paper, demonstrate the test evaluation possibility of QoS parameters in a switch and the bandwidth limitation.

Full redundant transmission of multicast stream via unicast network

Radu Tarabuta; Alin D. Potorac; Doru Balan

The paper is describing a data distribution solution to be used for efficient multicast streaming via unicast networks. An experiment was conducted in order to send a multicast video streaming over multiple paths simultaneously using internet network infrastructure followed by recomposing the initial information at the destination.

An approach of video VoIP communications using emulated network bandwidth control environment

Doru Balan; Alin D. Potorac

The continuous expand of network communications has reached a great level in last years. Internet protocol (IP) has transformed the delivery of content and services over networks. The perspective of lower costs communications had determined a very fast development of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies. Along with voice, VoIP communications channels can transport video streams also. This type of VoIP, known as videoconferencing communications, demands even a higher level of quality of services (QoS) assurance for network resources. The paper is centered on the essential role of basic network bandwidth control within VoIP communications, using as investigation subject IP video calls or videoconferencing communication.

Endorsement of a user-level bandwidth management application in a directory service environment

Marius C. Breaban; Adrian Graur; Alin D. Potorac; Doru Balan

In a world of the global communications, with continuous expansion to new horizons, which requires anytime and anywhere access to information sources, the need to manage the communication requirements is a very important issue. Traditional IP networks are facing difficulties in ensuring, to a user, a specific bandwidth[1] level for network access. Related to this matter, in this article we are proposing a bandwidth control solution, through the medium of a newly developed Java application. The bandwidth management process is realized taking account of the privileges arising from the users membership to certain directory service group, by using Active Directory specific software components. This paper presents the endorsement elements for a proposed network management application, highlighting the performed tests, at the development level, and the results obtained with the aimed bandwidth control application.

Development of eco-friendly cloud computing environments

Ionel Gordin; Adrian Graur; Doru Balan

Cloud computing technology knows a continuous growth in the past years. The growth of cloud computing generated in most situations to inefficient energy usage for storage, data processing, and network communications. The consumption of electrical energy generates at the end carbon emissions known also as carbon footprints. The eco-friendly cloud computing purpose is to decrease the carbon footprint of data centers by reducing their energy consumption. A considerable research has been performed with the purpose of supporting the eco-friendly cloud vision by optimizing the usage of computing resources from all areas of interest: software, hardware, network and storage. This paper contributes with multiple overviews over cloud energy optimization techniques and classifies them. This comprehensive overview is a considerable tool to use when designing a new data center or when planning to reduce power consumption of an already deployed data center.

Applicability of Amdahl’s Law in Multisession TCP/IP Communication

Radu-Cezar Tarabuta; Alin D. Potorac; Doru Balan; Adrian Graur

In this paper the authors are proposing to evaluate whether Amdahl’s law is valid in the transmission’s data using TCP/IP protocol, based on existing similarities. In our study the parallel processors cores are replaced with parallel communication sessions. The paper is demonstrating the possibility to extend the use of Amdahl’s law to multisession communications as a different method for QoS analysis in specified conditions.
