Identification of the precursors of hippocampal theta rhythm— A replication and extension

Douglas R. Eddy; Frederick J. Bremner; A.A. Thomas

Abstract A cryoprobe was used to modify the functioning of the septal nucleus of several cats resulting in a change in reticular-formation-induced hippocampal theta rhythm. Control animals sustaining electrolytic lesions in the septum showed a similar effect. Changes in hippocampal EEG patterns resulting from electrical stimulation of the reticular formation combined with cryogenic cooling of the septum, lead the authors to hypothesize that the reticular formation may be mainly responsible for the 4–5 Hz. frequencies in the hippocampalgram.

A comparison of single-subject and traditional statistical designs in steady-state evoked potential research

Douglas R. Eddy; Samuel L. Moise

An experiment was conducted to assess the relationship between level of auditory noise and a measure derived from the steady-state evoked potential (SSEP) called relative transmission time (RTF). The visual stimulus consisted of a 150-fL light that was modulated at 45, 48, or 51 Hz to a depth of 30%. The auditory stimulus was bandpass-limited white noise at 65, 75, or 85 dB, The outcomes of single-subject and group statistical analyses were compared. Neither statistic indicated a significant effect for cross-modal white noise on the SSEP. Whereas the more traditional group approach indicated only large between-subject variability, the single-subject approach clearly indicated deviant data of one of the subjects.

The effect of ESB on hippocampal EEG

Frederick J. Bremner; Douglas R. Eddy

Abstract Hippocampal EEG of rats was spectrally analyzed immediately after ESB to the MFB. Electrical stimulation of the MFB did not yield seizure patterns in the hippocampus. The result of this procedure did show however that ESB elicited spectra that were statistically different from those elicited by a flashing light, and similar to those produced in a conditioning situation.

Microcomputer, minicomputer, mainframe interfacing

Michael Yost; James Holcombe; Douglas R. Eddy

The problems associated with the transfer of data from one computer to another in conducting neuropsychological research are described. The reasons for using different computers to perform different tasks are outlined, and a rationale for using task-specific computers is presented. A detailed description of the use and function of the Kermit File Transfer Protocol in neuropsychological research is given.

Computer packages that contain the FFT

Douglas R. Eddy; Frederick J. Bremner

This paper critiques a set of software (i.e., SAS, BMDP, LSP) that contain a Fourier analysis program. In addition, this paper discusses both general-purpose software that runs a Fourier analysis and special Fourier analysis hardware. Some examples of the efficacy of commercially available software and hardware are given.

Application of color displays to problems in the undergraduate laboratory

Douglas R. Eddy

Some topics in psychology are difficult to master without dynamic visual displays. This paper describes a few applications of computer-driven color graphics displays in an undergraduate laboratory in neuropsychology. The paper includes the advantages, disadvantages, and cost of this approach, as well as student reactions and evaluations.
