PURPOSE To develop and psychometrically test the Korean version of the Cultural Competence Scale for Nurses (K-CCSN). METHODS A multi-phase questionnaire development method was used to develop the scale from November 2012 to April 2013. The item pool was generated based on literature review, existing scales and in-depth interviews. The content validity was evaluated twice by an expert panel. The scale validation was conducted with a convenience sample of 456 general hospital nurses recruited from five general hospitals and a nursing college in the Seoul Metropolitan Area of South Korea. The construct-related and criterion-related validity and internal consistency reliability of the scale were tested. RESULTS The 33-item K-CCSN comprised four subscales-cultural awareness, cultural knowledge, cultural sensitivity and cultural skills-explaining 53.96% of the total variance. The criterion-related validity was supported by a known-group comparison. The reliability analysis showed an acceptable-to-high Cronbachs alpha in total and for subscales ranging from .879 to .932. CONCLUSION This preliminary evaluation of psychometric scale properties demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability. The K-CCSN is able to provide scientific and empirical data regarding the cultural competence of clinical nurses. However, further studies are needed to test the applicability of the scale in different settings and contexts.

This study was designed to determine the effect of an academic–workplace partnership intervention, “3,000 more steps,” on improving physical activity (PA) and body composition of workers, and compare the characteristics of those workers who completed and did not complete the program. Participants were 70 sedentary office workers from an airline company. Pedometers determined their daily steps, and body composition was compared before and after the 8-week intervention; 39 of 70 (55.7%) participants completed the program. Daily steps increased from 5,811 to 9,240, and fat mass, waist–hip ratio, and body mass index (BMI) decreased for the completers. Non-completers had lower average PA and higher average fat mass at baseline than did completers. Overall, a workplace PA program could be successfully undertaken by occupational health nurses and a research team in partnership. However, to implement a cost-effective intervention program for inactive workers, further research is needed to ascertain why some workers do not complete the program.

Korean-Chinese currently represent the largest group of migrant workers in Korea. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of risk factors on the occurrence of work-related injuries and illnesses (WII). Data for 486 Korean-Chinese migrant workers were drawn from the 2010 Migrant Workers’ Health and Safety Survey in Korea. Logistic regression was used to identify the association between WII and multiple risk factors. Individual health status (OR = 3.83, 95% CI [2.01, 7.30]), safety training (OR = 0.39, 95% CI [0.18, 0.85]), job satisfaction (OR = 1.90, 95% CI [1.07, 3.38]), physical and chemical hazard exposure (OR = 1.05, 95% CI [1.02, 1.08]), and length of stay (OR = 1.01, 95% CI [1.00, 1.01]) were identified as risk factors for WII. The findings suggest the need for a comprehensive approach to assess WII risk factors, including personal, work organization and psychosocial demands, and acculturation in Korean-Chinese migrant workers.

AIM The 25 item Cultural Competence Assessment assesses the cultural competence of multiple types of healthcare providers. This study aimed to examine the validity and reliability of the Korean version of the questionnaire (KCCA) and to determine the need for changes to improve its validity and reliability. METHODS Data from 161 hospital nurses were used for the item analysis and to assess the reliability and construct validity of the KCCA before and after the deletion of nine items. RESULTS The KCCA did not demonstrate acceptable construct validity and subscale internal reliability. Nine items with high interitem correlations, high modification indices, and relatively lower factor loadings were deleted. The 16 item Modified KCCA showed improved construct validity, convergent and discriminant validity, and reliability. CONCLUSION While further psychometric evaluation of the Modified KCCA should be undertaken with larger samples and diverse professionals, the studys data provide evidence that the Modified KCCA might be a more suitable measure for use among Korean healthcare providers.

This study explored the psychosocial differences in the addictive tendency toward social networking sites (SNSs) between male and female Korean college students. A convenience sample of 253 college students, 90 males and 163 females, from two universities in G City, South Korea, was recruited between October 17 and November 12, 2015. Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney test, analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation, and simultaneous quantile regression. Female students showed a significantly higher tendency for SNS addiction than males did. Age and social support had significant effects on the tendency for SNS addiction in males; daily frequency of logging in to SNSs, subjective happiness, and depression had significant effects on the same in female respondents who fell above the 50th percentile on SNS addiction. Our data provide evidence of a heterogeneous effect of SNS addictive tendency determinants among college students, which is considered to be due to the interpersonal orientation of women and their vulnerability to depression.
