Un)attractor black holes in higher derivative AdS gravity

Dumitru Astefanesei; Nabamita Banerjee; Suvankar Dutta

We investigate five-dimensional static (non-)extremal black hole solutions in higher derivative Anti-de Sitter gravity theories with neutral scalars non-minimally coupled to gauge fields. We explicitly identify the boundary counterterms to regularize the gravi- tational action and the stress tensor. We illustrate these results by applying the method of holographic renormalization to computing thermodynamical properties in several con- crete examples. We also construct numerical extremal black hole solutions and discuss the attractor mechanism by using the entropy function formalism.

CFT Duals for Attractor Horizons

Dumitru Astefanesei; Yogesh K. Srivastava

In this paper we generalize the results of [1] to 5-dimensional Anti-de Sitter gravity theories with neutral scalars non-minimally coupled to gauge fields. Due to the attractor mechanism, the near horizon geometry of extremal black holes is universal and is determined by only the charge parameters. In particular, we study a class of near horizon geometries which contain an AdS2 × S 2 factor after Kaluza-Klein reduction. In this way we obtain the microscopic entropy of Gutowski-Reall black hole. We also point out a possible connection with the AdS2/CF T1 correspondence.

On attractor mechanism of AdS4 black holes

Andres Anabalon; Dumitru Astefanesei

Abstract We construct a general family of exact non-extremal 4-dimensional black holes in AdS gravity with U ( 1 ) gauge fields non-minimally coupled to a dilaton and a non-trivial dilaton potential. These black holes can have spherical, toroidal, and hyperbolic horizon topologies. We use the entropy function formalism to obtain the near horizon data in the extremal limit. Due to the non-trivial self-interaction of the scalar field, the zero temperature black holes can have a finite horizon area even if only the electric field is turned on.

Exact asymptotically flat charged hairy black holes with a dilaton potential

Andres Anabalon; Dumitru Astefanesei; Robert B. Mann

A bstractWe find broad classes of exact 4-dimensional asymptotically flat black hole solutions in Einstein-Maxwell theories with a non-minimally coupled dilaton and its nontrivial potential. We consider a few interesting limits, in particular, a regular generalization of the dilatonic Reissner-Nordström solution and, also, smooth deformations of supersymmetric black holes. Further examples are provided for more general dilaton potentials. We discuss the thermodynamical properties and show that the first law is satisfied. In the non-extremal case the entropy depends, as expected, on the asymptotic value of the dilaton. In the extremal limit, the entropy is determined purely in terms of charges and is independent of the asymptotic value of the dilaton. The attractor mechanism can be used as a criterion for the existence of the regular solutions. Since there is a ‘competition’ between the effective potential and dilaton potential, we also obtain regular extremal black hole solutions with just one U(1) gauge field turned on.

Hairy planar black holes in higher dimensions

Andrés Aceña; Andres Anabalon; Dumitru Astefanesei; Robert B. Mann

A bstractWe construct exact hairy planar black holes in D-dimensional AdS gravity. These solutions are regular except at the singularity and have stress-energy that satisfies the null energy condition. We present a detailed analysis of their thermodynamical properties and show that the first law is satisfied. We also discuss these solutions in the context of AdS/CFT duality and construct the associated c-function.

Black holes in ω-deformed gauged N=8 supergravity

Andres Anabalon; Dumitru Astefanesei

Abstract Motivated by the recently found 4-dimensional ω -deformed gauged supergravity, we investigate the black hole solutions within the single scalar field consistent truncations of this theory. We construct black hole solutions that have spherical, toroidal, and hyperbolic horizon topologies. The scalar field is regular everywhere outside the curvature singularity and the stress–energy tensor satisfies the null energy condition. When the parameter ω does not vanish, there is a degeneracy in the spectrum of black hole solutions for boundary conditions that preserve the asymptotic Anti-de Sitter symmetries. These boundary conditions correspond to multi-trace deformations in the dual field theory.

We investigate the thermodynamic and hydrodynamic properties of 4-dimensional gauge theories with finite electric charge density in the presence of a constant magnetic field. Their gravity duals are planar magnetically and electrically charged AdS black holes in theories that contain a gauge Chern-Simons term. We present a careful analysis of the near horizon geometry of these black branes at finite and zero temperature for the case of a scalar field non-minimally coupled to the electromagnetic field. With the knowledge of the near horizon data, we obtain analytic expressions for the shear viscosity coefficient and entropy density, and also study the effect of a generic set of four derivative interactions on their ratio. We also comment on the attractor flows of the extremal solutions.

-defomed gauged

Dumitru Astefanesei; Maria J. Rodriguez; Stefan Theisen

We investigate the thermodynamic stability of neutral black objects with (at least) two angular momenta. We use the quasilocal formalism to compute the grand canonical potential and show that the doubly spinning black ring is thermodynamically unstable. We consider the thermodynamic instabilities of ultra-spinning black objects and point out a subtle relation between the microcanonical and grand canonical ensembles. We also find the location of the black string/ membrane phases of doubly spinning black objects.

We construct a general class of exact regular black hole solutions with toroidal horizon topology in 5-dimensional Anti-deSitter gravity with a self-interacting scalar field. With these boundary conditions and due to the non-trivial backreaction of the scalar field, the no-hair theorems can be evaded so that an event horizon can be formed. The scalar field is regular everywhere outside the curvature singularity and it vanishes at the boundary where the potential is finite. We study the properties of these black holes in the context of AdS/CFT duality and comment on the dual operators, which saturate the unitarity bound. We present exact expressions for the beta-function and construct a c-function that characterizes the RG flow.
