Design and application of a novel high precision and low cost electronic tachogenerator for sensor-based brushless direct current motor drivers

Mehmet Cihat Ozgenel; Güngör Bal; Durmus Uygun

This study presents a precise speed control method for Brushless Direct Current (BLDC) Motors using an electronic tachogenerator (ETg) instead of an electro-mechanical tachogenerator. Most commonly used three-phase BLDC motors have three position sensors for rotor position data to provide commutation among stator windings. Aforementioned position sensors are usually Hall-effect sensors delivering binary-high and binary-low data as long as the motor rotates. These binary sets from three Hall-effect sensors can be used as an analogue rotor speed signal for closed loop applications. Each position sensor signal is apart from 120 electrical degrees. By using an electronic circuitry, a combination of position sensor signals is converted to the analogue signal providing an input to a PI speed controller. To implement this, a frequency to voltage converter has been used in this study. Then, the analogue speed signal has been evaluated as rotor speed data in comparison with the reference speed. So, an ETg system has been successfully achieved in place of an electro-mechanical tachogenerator for BLDC motor speed control. The proposed ETg has been tested under various speed conditions on an experimental setup. Employed tests and obtained results show that the proposed low-cost speed feedback sub-system can be effectively used in BLDC motor drive systems. Through the proved method and designed sub-system, a new motor controller chip with a speed feedback capability has been aimed.

Yüzey Yerleştirmeli Kalıcı Mıknatıslı Senkron Generatörlerin Tutma Torkunun Azaltılması İçin Stator Yapılandırması

Durmus Uygun; Yucel Cetinceviz

Dual stator/rotor brushless DC motors: A review of comprehensive modelling based on parametric approach and coupled circuit model

Durmus Uygun; Selim Solmaz; Yucel Cetinceviz

This paper proposes a dual-rotor brushless direct-current motor design specifically realized for unmanned underwater vehicles. Brushless DC motors are known for their high torque capacity and power density specs which are also suitable for underwater drive trains known as “thrusters”. Proposed brushless DC motor model having double rotor and double stator structure is basically designed by applying typical design procedure including sizing equations followed by detailed parametric analysis approach and coupled circuit model. Design of a dual-rotor brushless DC thruster having foregoing structure utilizes modular concentrated winding, optimized slot-opening and pole/slot ratio, outer and inner diameter and etc. Main output parameters such as rated torque, rated power, rated speed and total loss parameter of each brushless DC motor for different rotor positions are computed and compared. Additionally, a coupled-circuit analysis is employed to show the impact of the proposed design to evaluate rated power and torque capability.

Multi-criterion design and 2D cosimulation model of 4 kW PM synchronous generator for standalone run-of-the-river stations

Yucel Cetinceviz; Durmus Uygun; Hüseyin Demirel

This study reports the analytical computation including performance characteristics such like load line voltage and output power in combination with coupled-field circuit analysis of a 4kW direct drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) to be used in a micro-scale run-of-the-river-station application. The specifications such like slot opening, pole embrace and magnet length of PMSG are optimized by using parametric approach including multi-criterion design optimization. Based on the optimized design, the model has been exposed to some transient coupled-field circuit analyses based on variable river flow speed and variable ohmic load conditions. The analytical studies related to finite element methods and conducted parametric approaches verified the effectiveness of the employed dynamic co-simulations.
