Intravenous Nourishment with Protein Carbohydrate and Fat in Man.

Dwight E. Clark; Alexander Brunschwig

Summary Parenteral nutrition was carried out over a 17-day period in an adult male by means of intravenous injection of dextrose, casein digest (amino acids) and emulsified fat. It is believed that this is the first recorded instance of nutrition in man by the simultaneous administration of the 3 primary types of foodstuff.

Utilization of parenterally administered casein digest for synthesis of proteins.

Dwight E. Clark; Alexander Brunschwig; Nancy Corbin

Conclusion Regeneration of plasma proteins was found to occur in dogs with depleted proteins stores and lowered plasma proteins on a nitrogen-free diet receiving intravenously an enzymatic hydrolysate of casein as the sole source of nitrogen. Parenterally administered casein digest constitutes an effective method of parenteral nutrition.

Thyroid depressant activity in bovine fraction VI.

Bernard Rabinovitch; Franklin J. Star; Dwight E. Clark

Summary Some very active samples of BFrVI have shown marked ability to depress thyroid function as measured by the conversion ratio. Careful examination of these samples has shown that there is little or no iodine in the serum fraction, so the presence of thyroxine or any other iodine-containing calorigenic substance cannot be used to explain these results. The possibility that either versene or barium ions, both used in preparation of fraction VI, are responsible for this activity has been discounted. The higher sensitivity of the Sprague-Dawley female rat in comparison with the Holtzman male rat in this bio-assay has been demonstrated. Further studies are in progress attempting to elucidate the nature of this thyroid depressant in bovine fraction VI.
