Modeling of effective rainfall rate based on attenuation measurements in converging terrestrial links

L. da Silva Mello; M.S. Pontes; R.S.L. de Souza; E. Couto de Miranda

In this paper, the statistical characterization of the effective rainfall rate parameter is investigated based on the cumulative distribution of measured signal attenuation in converging links with different path lengths, spatial orientations and operation frequencies. Results indicate that the lognormal distribution provides the best fit for the effective rainfall rate. Also, an empirical expression for the effective rainfall rate as a function of path length and link orientation was obtained.

A prelude to the modelling of the dynamic properties of attenuation on slant-path links

E. Couto de Miranda; M.S. Pontes; L.A.R. da Silva Mello

In this paper, the statistics of the number and duration of fades-within specific duration ranges-on five slant path links in Brazil are presented and discussed. This duration scaling seeks to identify the contributions from dynamically different types of rain, such as convective and stratiform, which combine to form an overall cumulative distribution of rainfall. By identifying the range of influence of each rainfall regime it will be easier to build an accurate statistical model for the dynamics of attenuation.

Dynamics of attenuation in equatorial Brazil: 1-year analysis of three 12 GHz Earth-space links

E. Couto de Miranda; L.A.R. da Silva Mello; M.S. Pontes

The dynamic analysis of attenuation is defined as the statistical analysis of time duration and number of events of a given attenuation level being exceeded. The results from the dynamic statistical analysis of one year of radiometric attenuation measurements in three 12 GHz stations located in equatorial Brazil are presented and discussed. Such data and results are very rarely presented in the literature and may provide design information for the implementation of future satellite communication systems which would operate in such remote and inhospitable areas of the planet.
